Upgrade PSU and add on video card

Sorry guys had a bit of a health scare and ended up in hospital :( all good though nothing serious but obvious has delayed things somewhat! Lol

Okay have had a look at the list that Phil made and all looks good :) I think though we have discussed that I may just get the PSU first and almost hope that it will allow the rest of my current pc work though I am not very optimistic that it will solve it all...

One thing I wanted to ask is why Phil chose a 650w instead of a 450w which if I have done it correctly would more than comfortably run all that my pc currently has :)

Glad you are feeling better.. On the psu 650 watt...As a standard we usually suggest a higher wattage psu...you know to have a bit of breathing room in case you add another piece of hardware.. Sometimes you can find a higher wattage psu at the same price of a lower wattage psu.

Actually a quick question... the PSU says it's modular? I think I am right in thinking that this means it doesn't come with the cables? Does this mean I'll need to check through y old PSU and take note of all the cables that I'll need to go from my psu to the MB etc?
Cheers guys

According to the pic at the link phil sent you it has cables and it is a 550 watt.

Glad you are feeling better.

Thanks for stepping in with the additional info Veeg (y)

What Veeg has explained is why I suggested the PSU that I did at the time but prices change daily so we may be able to find a cheaper but equally as good PSU when you are ready to purchase, example of this is the EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G2 650W Modular 80+ Gold PSU here also a very good PSU with a 7 year warranty but today costs a fiver less than the Corsair previously suggested.

A little more info for you, fully modular means that all cables are provided and you only need to hook up what you need then store the rest somewhere safe, the 650W PSU I suggested gives you plenty of wiggle room for adding more hardware at a later date but most importantly for a bit more cash than a lesser 650W gold efficiency rated Corsair PSU you get a 7 as opposed to a 3 year warranty.

Ah the site I went on seemed to e suggesting the exact opposite saying that not modular was the one with all the cables... I expect this is where I am being confused lol link below
https://support.nzxt.com/hc/en-us/a...Semi-Vs-Non-Modular-What-Are-The-Differences-

And I am more or less ready to order today as long as you guys are confident that whichever PSU I buy should be able to run what I currently have and any upgrade should my parts turn out to be unsavable :)

Aye, good to go Veeg (y)

Read your NZXT article info Mark and can see why it may be slightly misleading;

"Comes with no cables pre-attached. You only attach the ones you need."

Just an update for you guys that have helped me soo much over this while ordeal... I got the PSU today and connected everything up and now the pc will power up which is an inprovement lol
However there is still the display issues when using both the video card and the normal vga port... I will try taking the video card out again to see if that helps at all but I imagine that this means a new mb is likely needed :(

Okay so guessing this is my newbie-ness showing through but taking the video card out seems to have solved the display problem and so now I imagine that it is just the video card that will need replacing lol

Can you copy/paste the above information into your thread here please Mark, mixing up information from two threads is not a good idea as it can cause confusion and lead to mishaps.

Hey guys, what should I be looking for in an add on video card?
I went on the part picker site and have gotten a list down on stuff I can think of but now it's just a case of how to decide which is better or whether I am looking at much overkill lol
https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/products/video-card/#X=0,28139&R=5&sort=d8&r=6144
Hopefully that should be the list of ones I had narrowed it down to and as I say i'm just looking to find out which would be best for me :)
cheers again guys :)

You can narrow that list down to four cards by ruling out the Zotac and the Gigabyte mini itx type card, I personally would go for the fastest of the cards as it also has ACX cooling something that my present GPU has and which I can vouch for keeps things cool, the second EVGA only has the one cooling fan and the other MSI card was described as being a bit flimsy by one user, not good for a £200+ product, either one of the following two will do, both require a 400W PSU and 27 amps on the +12V rail so you are well covered power wise.

EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB SSC GAMING ACX Graphics Card
MSI GeForce GTX 1060 6GB Graphics Card

Okay guys I have ordered the EVGA video card suggested above. I am now looking at a few other bits and pieces that might help making things faster etc. I see that a solid state hard drive seems to be a good improvement although the drawback is that I can only seem to find up to 1tb ones and I am already using more than that on my current HD.
Was wonder what advice you guys had about this? I read that it could be beneficial to get a SSD for the OS and then a SATA HD for the rest of the memory needs, what do you guys think? :)

SSD for the OS and a separate partition on the SSD for your favourite games, the price difference between a 250+ and 480GB SSd is around £40 for a good one example here

Your MB ASUS P8Z77-V LX specs here

I would suggest a clean install of Windows and the MBs chipset drivers to the SSD rather than cloning the present HDD although there is migration software available if you wish to go that route.

The only issue with the clean install is that I only have a disc for windows 8 which I got the free upgrade to 10 on and i don't think that they are still doing that anymore, though i may be mistaken.

As you have previously upgraded to Windows 10 via Windows 8 you can download and burn a Windows 10 ISO to a DVD or USB thumb drive, I recommend the DVD option as it is less problematic with changing the boot sequence and secure boot option etc.

How it works, when you took advantage of the free upgrade to Windows 10 the details for your present MB and product key etc were stored on the MS database.

Take a look at the guide here to see if you are ok with it, you want option two (create media to use on another computer).
