I have Windows10 on my desktop computer.
I live in a fairly remote rural area and we are used to very slow broadband speeds It seems this is set to continue in the immediate future.
Eventually most just accept very slow speeds, but Windows10 manages to become even slower when downloading updates.
Often it fails to download a specific update and has to start the process again.
Is there a relatively simple method of solving this problem or alternatively can it be sorted by an expert?
I suppose one method might be to revert my previous operating system Windows8.1
Would this work and would one have to pay?
Last, I understand it is not possible to pick a time, such as the night to download and install!

Wouldnt be a good idea, Windows 10 is better than 8.1 + mainstream support for 8.1 ended back in January of this year, you would still get Windows updates up until 2023 but hardware providers will already have reduced time and money on security and driver updates.

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

I had a very similar situation, best download was 2Mbps on a good day, and like you, if one PC in the house started a Windows 10 update, the whole network ground to a halt. Had to try and schedule the updates to kick off as everyone went to bed.
But now I’ve moved and get at least 30Mbps, so all is good.
And there-in lies your answer, as simple and as sucky as it sounds, you need better internet - it’s that basic.

What delivery metyhod are you currently on; ADSL, cable, fibre, wireless?
I’m now on fibre which is optic cable to the. Exchange than copper to the house. It was crappy ADSL but I could have improved delivery. If I went wireless to the house but I had to pay double to get half the data.

So it all depends on your area, Providers, and amount of money you want to throw at it.
