Because my laptop always grinds to a halt whenever Windows updates decides to do its stuff on it I have gone into Settings and temporarily suspended its downloading procedures - in this instance until the middle of next month. Unfortunately, I still keep getting "updates" via Windows module installer/worker, as revealed in Task Manager. . . and with much the same grinding effect upon the running of my laptop. The point is that I don't know if my (seemingly suspended) monthly Win Updates and Win module installer are two aspects of the same thing, or whether they are entirely different beasts. I have tried to find out from Microsoft Help and come away even more confused. No surprises there, I'm afraid. I remain baffled and bamboozed.

Solved The Difference(s) Between Win Updates & Win Module Installer. . . if any?

Never mess with Windows updates, you will at some point end up with a computer that will not boot or one that is infected with malware.
Change the update time to when you do not use the computer, overnight for example, the updates will also be a lot quicker as there will be less users online.
NB: You will on occasion need to click on Restart after a major update has been installed.

I will try to rephrase the question: are the "major" Windows Updates, which typically require a reboot (usually occurring once a month or thereabouts) the same as the Windows module installer's "updates" I/we receive on a daily basis, and which are flagged up in Task Manager? I really can't make it any plainer than that.
Yes, I have already changed the update times on my PC from daytime to overnight. That was last July. And the result? No change whatsoever thus far. MS still insists on downloading its updates at its preferred time - i.e. during the daytime. . . this despite my instructions to the contrary, despite too my keeping the PC running overnight in order for it to do its updating unimpeded. Fed up with Microsoft. . . and Win 10 in particular? You bet.

The main difference is that daily updates do not normally require a restart whereas major updates always do.
Daily updates may offer minor fixes.
Major updates often contain patches/bug fixes.
Both types of update help to protect the computer from malware attack.
Both should be installed asap.
Only optional updates should be treated as being optional.
