Solved Slow boot

Status
Not open for further replies.
Hello everyone,
so I just built my new pc and enabled XMP profile, it takes more than a minute for it to post. When I disabled XMP it was probably 5-6 seconds faster. While the PC is booting there's a yellow light on my motherboard for the vram. It doesn't blink or anything, just a solid light. The light turns off and the pc boots after a minute or something. I contacted MSI and they said to do a CMOS reset. I did it but still nothing changed.

Specs:
Mobo: MSI B650 Gaming plus wifi
CPU: Ryzen 5 7600x
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 2x16 6000 mhz ddr5 cl30
PSU: Corsair rm750e

Will explain the below and then look at your Speccy report to see if anything else is amiss;

CPU: Ryzen 5 7600x
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 2x16 6000 mhz ddr5 cl30

The RAM is not appropriate for your CPU, AMD state here up to 5200MHz/MT/s and if you have EXPO/XMP enabled the RAM will get auto OCd past what the CPU can handle and the PC will become unstable.

Modern RAM has two speeds, SPD (serial presence detect) and XMP or similar such as EXPO, SPD is what the BIOS detects on boot which for DDR4 for example is most often 2133MHz and XMP which when enabled will set the RAM to run at the maximum speed that it is capable of.

Something to keep in mind for the future, a CPU must be compatible with a MB whereas the RAM has to be compatible with both the CPU and the MB, this because a MB can be compatible with faster CPUs than the one in your list of parts and MB manufacturers often state RAM speeds that far exceed that which any compatible CPU can handle, this is misleading at the least or dishonest at worst.

Edit to add: Can see a couple of things in Speccy but have a question;

Operating System
Windows 11 Pro 64-bit
Computer type: Virtual
Installation Date: 5/7/2022 8:21:47 AM

Any idea as to why the first update shown to have been installed does not correspond with when Windows was first installed.

3/26/2024 2024-02 Update for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5036212)
Install this update to resolve issues in Windows. For a complete
listing of the issues that are included in this update, see the
associated Microsoft Knowledge Base article for more information.
After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.
Not Installed

This in itself is an issue which I will explain later.

So do I have to set my RAM speed manually or change my RAM sticks? Also I have no idea as to why the first update date doesn't correspond with the date that windows was first installed.

Two things that I would suggest as a starting point;

Restore the MBs default factory settings in the BIOS, they are sometimes listed as one of the following " factory defaults" "most stable" or on newer boards "optimized" please note that if you have both the "most stable" and the "optimized" options in the BIOS you should choose the most stable" option as in this instance the "optimized" settings are a form of overclocking that can cause instability.

Save the new settings, exit the BIOS, restart the computer the do the below;

Check and if need be install the latest W11 chipset drivers from here

Check and if need be install the latest W11 AMD video drivers from here

Restart the computer, test by using the computer as you normally would, post back with an update when ready, no rush here as after ten hrs online Im calling it a day now,

Okay, I did that. Everything is running fine and all of my drivers are installed. Am I obligated to install the AMD video drivers as well? I mean I have a graphics card and the drivers are up to date.
Also my RAM is running at 4800 Mhz right now. What do I do about that?

Your choice on the AMD video drivers, if your Nvidea GPU is happy then so should we be.

Suggest leaving everything as is for a day or so and if all stays good post back and we will address your RAM.

When I turn on the PC the red and yellow lights turn on for about 8-9 seconds and when I restart it only the yellow light turns on for like 4-5 seconds.
Yes, that's my RAM but its the RGB version.

8-9 seconds seems to be a long time but the lights being on and then going off is normal.

If you are comfortable manually setting the RAM speed and voltage you should initially try 5000MT/s and 1.35V and if all good then try 5200MT/s and 1.35V, if you have problems with either speed try increasing the voltage to the maximum which is 1.40V, do not exceed this.
