Screen resolution inconsistencies

I've just bought a new PC and after setting things up for about half an hour, the screen resolution locked and I can't change it. (it's greyed out in the display settings)

I have tried updating / uninstalling / reinstalling the graphics drivers as suggested from looking around for solutions but nothing has worked.

I do however have a large tv in my kitchen that I tried plugging the PC into and that worked perfectly, full 1920 x 1080 resolution with no problems. I then brought the smaller TV monitor from my room into the kitchen where I then switched the HDMI from going into the large tv, into my smaller tv (while the pc was still on) and the resolution was fine. however after taking it all back into my room and plugging the pc back into my smaller television monitor, the same problems occur.

I have no idea what the problem is, especially since:
a) it was working fine in the beginning
b) it works on the larger tv
c) it worked on the smaller tv after being in the large tv

any help is greatly appreciated as I've been trying to solve this problem for hours.

have you tried Restore Points?
what about a 'repair' reinstall of Windows, where it leaves your programs and data alone and just reloads Win10.
was there an update recently?
what is your OS build number?
are you using a add-on graphics card or the inbuilt one?
does booting the PC into Safe Mode effect things?
