Sometimes when registering to a new site, they send a secret code to my email address. To get the code, I go to my email, but then I am disconnected from the site I was trying to register on. When I return to the site, since the connection was broken, I have to start over again but it is a never ending cycle. Sometimes I can get the code on my cell phone and keep the internet connection open on my computer, sometimes they just want email notification. How do I solve this?

what email program are you using?
back in the olden days (you know, dial-up modem and all that) some email clients had 'disconnect after sending/receiving' sort of option to save connection costs - look for something like that in your email software.

but as a work-around if nothing else pans out, use your PC to log on the web site but use your phone to check for emails.

Ah, so you are all browser based.
one site for what you are trying to register on and another for your Gmail checking.
what browser do you use?
are you using different tabs - one on Gmail, the other one that web site?
also try another browser and see if the issue still occurs.
so if you are using Chrome, try Firefox.

yeah, AVG Secure Browser came out a few years ago.
but as with most (all?) things AVG/Avast, they are nowhere near the quality software they used to be and I'd be removing it from your system if it was me.
make Chrome your default browser and there is always Firefox if ever you want to take another browser for a test drive.

I have google chrome browser but it is currently broken. When I click it on I get a server error wsith complicated instructions on how to fix it but it's way over my head. The AVG was put in by a pc repair guy when he removed a virus years ago.

What started this all off was I was trying to get on to Skype but Microsoft wanted me to register with them to do that, When I tried to register with Microsoft I got into the problem with getting the secret code. I got that solved by using multiple tabs as you guys suggested and got all the way through to getting skype but they wanted a monthly charge. Not worth it to me.

Uninstall Chrome and then reinstall Chrome.

Here is a link where you can download the install for Chrome.

Skype does not charge monthly fees to use it is a free program for home use. Then only time I have seen it charge is for using it as a phone and or the business version.

Thanks for the reply. I thought it was suspicious that they wanted me to pay. I will try again to download it. As for removing/reinstalling chrome, I think my email contacts would disappear if I remove chrome. It sees to be part of chrome?

the email contacts will live in whatever email client you use.
so for example, if you are with provider ABC and use their webmail system, that is where the contacts, and all your emails, will live.
that is why you can see all your previous Sent, Deleted etc no matter what PC or location you use.

don't forget, if Chrome just won't play nice, there are many other good browsers to use: Firefox, Opera, PaleMoon, SlimJet, just to pick the few I have used over the years.

Rustys, you have been most kind and helpful. Thanks. I did manage to get signed up on skype, password and all. But when I sign in on skype I get a message " There are problems with your Microsoft account. To fix this, sign in to account.live.com from a browser". Another problem, which I think is related to this, is when I click on chrome, I get a message "server error in '/' Application, with a very complicated bunch of steps to fix it. First step is to get to the chrome root directory which I can't seem to find. I think this problem may be the cause of the one I mentioned above. When I went to the account.live.com site it led me through a bunch of steps that led nowhere. I'm clearly in over my head here. I know one of my sons could take care of all this but he is in another state and can't come here because of the pandemic.
