Upgraded brothes pc 6 months ago, recently his pc has started to switch off during some games at random times.
Upgradedhis Graphics card to a 970 gtx a while ago, fine for a while until his PC started switching off randomly during games.
We ended up upgrading his mobo and cpu too around the same time.
After a look around, found an issue with his CPU cooler, so replaced that thinking his CPU was overheating.
New cooler definately cools, but still get random crashes.
Next, thought it might be the powersupply. No overheating or burning smells... so maybe the corsair gold...might have been bronze (but was a few years old) 650w wasnt enough.
Tried with a novatech Artic 850w - seemed to improve, managed to play a full game of total war, but then as i changed the ingame settings, the pc restarted again.

Next - thought maybe the graphics card - swapped out for a graphics card in my own pc which i know is 100% fine - same card more or less, same issue however.

Thought it may be slow HD related, so currently testing it all on a single SSD which before, was only used for windows. Not that this should effect it imo.
I was getting 'windows has stopped working' etc errors when I started changing things, ended up doing a fresh install of windows as it wasnt letting me install java either. However, since doing the refresh, get no windows errors, can install everything i need to and just get the restart back to boot screen.

Ive tested everything individually on BurninTest and everything passes apart from the 3d graphics. It gets to about 13 out of 15 mins then crashes.
Becuase of this, I cant seem to get a log file from BiT to show the GPU data. Either way I know I still get the same issue with another card that is confirmed working.

Running normal programs - eg windows and internet, is fine - im currently using the pc in question to write this post. So its stable normally

Hi,

Have you updated your motherboards BIOS to the latest version? Are you overclocking any components?

Have you tried setting the power plan in Windows 10 to high performance? Are you running Windows 10 version 1909?

Havnt touched the Bios. No components are being OCd.
Will check windows settings this evening. 1909 most recent or a bad update?

Have checked all, bios is most up to date, no overclocking all stock. Power plan set to high performance and confirmed updated to windows 1909.

Have you installed all the latest drivers for your hardware devices?

Try Performing a clean boot in Windows and see if the same issue occurs.

Does the rebooting happen with every game you play? Does the computer actually do a restart or does it shut down?

mentioned in my original post that this is on a fresh install of windows and everything is up to date with little to no applications opening on start up, effectively its a clean boot every time.
It happens on all games, but random times.
It restarts. Pc freezes for 2 secs, then its as if i press the reset switch. (does not shut down and stay off)

Have you tried unplugging the reset switch cable going from your computer case to the motherboard and seeing if the computer still restarts?

It still could be an issue with the power supply as that particular model the Novatech Arctic 850 watt may not be delivering stable enough power to the system which is causing reboots.

have tried with reset switch removed, still the same - reboot after 10 or so mins.
Hoping not to use a 3rd power supply...

Try taking the motherboard out of the case to rule out a faulty reset switch or power button as that can cause this issue. Use a screwdriver to power up the motherboard jumper pins to power on the system. If you try that and the computer is still rebooting then the power supply is not able to provide sufficient power while playing games which is why its still rebooting.

The pc case and all switches are brand new - so it wont be those, i moved everything into the new case to increase airflow and avoid issues like faulty switches before hand - wasnt mentioned as its not strictly hardware!

If you have another video card that uses less wattage than the current card, try switching to a lower wattage video card, then see if the computer reboots during a gaming session.

Also if you haven't already I would update the motherboards BIOS to the latest version.
unfortunately i dont have a second lower card, only similar make.
All drivers are up to date.
Have bought a decent PSU to see if it is just a low quality psu thats the issue. seems most seem to think power is an issue somewhere along the line
