Was just wondering I have two 8gb ram sticks sadly my PCs ram stick slot has not been working properly and now won’t work at all so I need to buy one 16gb ram stick I was just wondering if this would really affect the performance of the pc like some have said I just want my pc to be able to run almost the same after getting that 16gb stick thanks anyone for the info

Lets run a speccy report to get the information.
If the computer is a desktop can you post the brand and model name or number of the power supply (PSU).
Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.
In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.
Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

I have a i7 7700k
Had 16 gb of ram now only they 8 pretty slow at 2400 MHz or something
1 tb storage
an msi b250m motherboard
and a nvidia GeForce 1050ti
Im planning on getting the one 16gb ram stick just hoping my performance doesn’t drop to bad and I can still play the same games fine gonna be upgrading the ram speed a little bit idk if that will help but if you have any info thank you
Been having problems ever since I got this pc from my friend for Christmas I got it on a really cheap good deal though since he wanted me to finally have a pc only 100 dollars but for some reason the one ram slot has been randomly shutting the pc off after hours or days of use and now it finally has fully seemed to not work at all pc will only boot with one stick so sadly I have to get a 16gb stick for now
How have you confirmed that it is the memory slot and not one of the sticks of RAM.
Just a fyi, the fastest RAM that your CPU can handle is 2400MHz and to achieve this speed you need two sticks of matching RAM working in dual channel, one 16GB stick only being able to function in single channel will only work at a max of 1200MHz meaning that you will be taking a 50% performance hit.

Thank you so much for the response that just saved me a lot and I’m positive it’s not the sticks so I really don’t know what I’m gonna do now not trying to have my performance drop that much was only looking to spend 100 dollars but it seems I might need a new motherboard I guess if anyone can give me some help on what to do next

And sorry to reply to the thread so much but I confirmed it was the slots by using both sticks in the first slot both sticks boot and work fine it just seems to be that one slot it was working fine for like the first month but then my pc would random start shutting off after hours of use for no reason temps were fine but it would always come back on as long as I just swapped the rams sticks but overtime it progressively got worse and would take hours sometimes to get it to boot again and now it finally just won’t boot in that slot at all and another question you said my motherboard is only 2400mhz does this mean if both my sticks are 2400mhz it could never equal 4800mhz on this board I would need and upgrade? If my board supported say 3000mhz would it end up capping at 3000mhz thank you for any info
It is your CPU that dictates what RAM you can use not the MB and the reason for this is because the MB is designed to be compatible with a lot more CPUs than just the one.
As explained in my reply #6. the fastest RAM that your CPU is meant to work with is 2400MHz, you can confirm this here

Disregard last question kinda I think I understand it’s my cpu that can only run 2400mhz that’s crazy I didn’t realize how much better Ryzen really easy but if you guys could still help me find a good cheaper motherboard it would be appreciated

Change the Windows Power Plan to Balanced, Ultra and High Performance are a form of overclocking that is known to cause stability and overheating issues and the setting should only be used for gaming type notebooks that have a discrete GPU that needs the extra power

The RAM issue is a secondary concern atm and the below needs to be sorted asap
Partition 1
Partition ID: Disk #0, Partition #1
Disk Letter: C:
File System: NTFS
Volume Serial Number: 56EAB9BC
Size: 931 GB
Used Space: 931 GB (100%)
Free Space: 0 B (0%)
For Windows to be able to run efficiently and to be able to update, on a mechanical HDD you need to have between 20 and 25% of the partition or drive available as free storage space at all times and on an SSD between 10 and 20%, if you don`t you risk Windows becoming corrupt or not being able to update which also puts you at risk of malware attack.
Data only storage devices should not be allowed to get any lower than 10% of free storage space of the full capacity of the drive/partition on the drive, this also to avoid data corruption.
Please note that storage devices can physically fail if the amount of free storage space is allowed to drop below the required 10 or 20/25% minimum.
Uninstall as many unused programs, games, videos and music files as you can and get yourself another means of backing up to, post back when you have between 25 and 30% free storage on the C: drive/partition and we can go from there.

Thank you didn’t realize the storage thing was that major of an issue working on deleting stuff now will also change the power plan and I have always wondered why it says I have four slots it’s the most confusing thing Ill let you know when I’m done

Apart from the free storage space that Windows and Windows Defender need to be able to install updates Windows also needs a fair amount of free space for what is called File Swapping, if there is not enough room for this things get overwritten which = corruption which in turn leads to all sorts of hardware and software problems.
Your new Speccy report is telling us that you have not changed the Windows Power Plan to Balanced.
Now that you have the free storage space available you need to get Windows fully up to date.

Before we go any further, would you be ok with using just the 8GB for the rest of the day as what will be suggested next will mean leaving the PC disconnected from the mains power over night with the CMOS battery removed from the MB.
