back in the day, yes, lots of times, as we all transitioned from PS/2 to USB devices.
was the adapter you tried one of these type;
and did you reboot the PC after plugging in the keyboard as PS2 ports are only initialised at startup.
from memory, always found those adapters worked for me.

Ps/2 keyboard to usb
So my old hp kb9970 had ps/2 till i cut it with scissors and split the wires so i also cut a usb and split the wires but the ps/2 has yellow red brown and gray when the usb has red green white and black so which ones go to which?

some ps2 devices require an active ps2->usb connector and do not work correctly with just a wire switchover.
i found a circuit using a microcontroller but its not really presented wih diy in mind
a manufactured version might be an option depending on availabiltity and price
other than that it seems like a lost cause

Keyboards are not so easy as mice are to convert.

How many pins does the keyboard have?
Can you post a pic of it I think your keyboard may be an AT connector.

I'd simply be getting an equivalent well built mechanical replacement USB keyboard.
let's face it, sentimental value aside, you're going to have to bite the bullet one day.
I gave up when I saw that diagram in post #7 where it had (to my knowledge) the USB pin layout wrong on the left hand side.
below is what I've been using for making USB connections, but maybe that diagram is what's needed to convert to PS/2.
I'd simply be getting an equivalent well built mechanical replacement USB keyboard.
