Solved Problems with power management

I have been working with Antman on a couple of issues I have with my computer. A couple have been straightened out but I still have this nagging problem of lousing my internet connection if I let the machine run after I am done for the day. If I log off when I'm done for the day and then log back on in the morning it seems to work okay. I know, I know....Why not just log off and on and be done with it? Well, that probably would be the thing to do for most but my brain doesn't work that way. I know there is a problem and I would like to see if it can be fixed if possible.

When I first started the other thread I suspected I had multiple problems with this machine and at least some have been addressed. What happens is this. When the machine sits overnight and I go back to it the next morning, I touch my mouse to wake the machine up the screen saver goes away and the desktop pops up like it should. The first thing I notice is that I have lost my internet connection. If I right click on the icon to get the box to come up where I can click to reconnect only part of it shows and then the mouse pointer starts to act funny sometime it will move when I move the mouse sometimes it wont. While this is going on the whole computer seems to be in slow motion. I have tried to go to the control panel to reconnect but with the mouse acting up it takes awhile to get there and when I do manage to get to the box where I can click to either connect or repair the whole machine locks up. It will not even shut down it just gets to the place where it says it's shutting down and then quits. I let it sit for 15 minutes yesterday and the only way I could shut down was to push and hold the power button. When it boots back up it works okay until the next day when I go through this again all over.

I have noticed when I wake the machine up if I don't do anything but hit the start box and log off and on, I get my connection back and the machine works like it should. It just fouls up when I try to reconnect before I do the log off thingy.

g'day @olddude,
my apologies if I repeat steps already done in the other thread (I've either not read it or have forgotten it - both equally possible) :)

firstly, +1 with @vger, XP had so many issues with its power management, or more correctly, resurrecting from any sort of sleep' mode, that it was the first option I always disabled. In fact, still do to this day with Windows 10 as well (force of habit now).

but in your case, it sounds like the network adapter isn't waking up after an overnight nap.
have you gone into Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, expand the Network Adapters group, right click on the adapter you use and go to Properties.
see if you can find anything dealing with power management.

XP has very limited power options compared to the later OS's.

Thanks! I had never had this problem since I got this machine. It just started doing this when I had the other problem that Antman helped me with.

When it first started I had a different network adapter that plugged into a USB port on the front of the machine and I thought maybe it had gone bad. I installed another one that plugged into a PCI slot inside the computer but it does the same thing.

I did check the power management box in network adapter properties box and There are two boxes you can click or un-click.

The first one says: allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. {This has a check mark in that box}

For some reason I thought we had unchecked that first box when I was working with Antman but it is checked now. Should I un-check that box?

The other box says: Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby. { There is no check mark in that box}

Well that seemed to work. I left it running yesterday and when I came back this morning My connection was still there. I was sure we had cleared those check boxes before but maybe I was just dreaming.:LOL: Thanks for the tip!
