Problems with GPU

Not open for further replies.
A few months ago I bought a new XFX RX 580 8GB, used it for almost 3 months, without any heavy use, then, one day, it just stops working, the screen is black. I tried uninstalling the drivers, didn't help and now I cant install them, cause the AMD software cant recognize any AMD devices, the fans spin, there's a blue light that's constantly on, can I fix it or I should just get a new one?

ARGUS APS-720W

Should come with both a health warning and a fire extinguisher the quality is so bad.

If you can still get video from the MB when the GPU is removed from the system you may just need to get an appropriate PSU, worse case scenario though is that the PSU may have killed the RX580.

Lol, is it that bad? I got it installed at a PC repair shop like 3 or 4 years ago, when my PC wasn't turning on and they said this their best one lol. But about the GPU - I tried it on another setup and still the same problem - black screen. If it is completely killed, wouldn't it just not turn on? It has the blue LED light on, the fans spin when PC starts and then like 10 minutes later when it gets to 60 degrees, I think.

There is one thing that is possibly worse than using a known poor quality brand of PSU and that is using one that is unheard of, for brands of PSU to trust and brands to avoid please refer to the links in my sig.

Can you get video from your MB when the RX 580 is removed from the board - if yes and the other set up that you tried had an appropriate PSU 500/550W PSU and the 8 pin external power supply was connected then the RX 580 is bad I`m afraid.

I get video from the integrated gpu, even when the RX 580 is connected, just when I plug the HDMI cable in the RX 580, the screen is black.

If you were aware of the above at the time of your OP both points should have been mentioned, the issue for example could be that the HDMI port on the card no longer works, trying one of the other types of video port on the GPU would have been suggested as would trying another screen that has a VGA or display port.

Interesting that you get onboard video when the RX 580 is in the PCI-E slot, the integrated graphics should not normally work when there is an add on GPU in the board no matter whether or not the add on GPU is working, what normally happens is the BIOS detects the add on GPU during POST and then by default it disables the integrated video ports, this would not explain why the RX 580 would not work in the other set up though, has anyone been messing with the BIOS at all

If trying another type of video port and/or screen does not change anything do the below;

Try restoring the MBs default factory settings in the BIOS, they are sometimes listed as one of the following " factory defaults" "most stable" or on newer boards "optimized" please note that if you have both the "most stable" and the "optimized" options in the BIOS you should choose the most stable" option as in this instance the "optimized" settings are a form of overclocking that can cause instability.

Can I ask that you do not quote every reply as we have to read the full post to make sure nothing gets missed,, thanks.

I tried resetting BIOS by choosing load default options, cause that was the only option and it didn't help. Also, I've tried the DVI port on the RX 580 when I was trying it on the other setup and that didn't change anything. So the card probably is just broken, right?

If the other set up is known to be 100% working and has a good quality 500W or above PSU and the GPU still gives no video output it does suggest that the card is dead.

Long shot this but does your GPU have two BIOS switch positions, if yes, try the switch in the other position.

Whatever happens, I strongly suggest that you get the GPU tested by a local tech to confirm the cards condition.

Did you check this.

You 100% need a far better PSU but purchase nothing until you have had the present GPU tested, if you have to purchase a new GPU you will need to make sure that you also purchase an appropriate PSU, parts are expensive atm because of covid so don`t waste cash by going over the top and likewise don`t go cheap by purchasing a rubbish brand or anything less than a Gold efficiency rated unit, there is plenty of info in the PSU links in my sig to help you make the right choice + you can always ask here for someone to give a second opinion.

Do I switch it while the PC is on? Do I switch it while the GPU is plugged in? And none of the local shops work with GPU's , they just do diagnostics for the whole PC, so that isn't really a solution.

You never, ever, work inside a computer that is running, the computer must be shut down and disconnected from the wall socket and be sure to ground yourself by touching a metal part of the case or the PSU before you reach inside of the case, this protects the hardware from any static that may be in your body.

What type of shop is this

Seriously, I wouldn`t take my computer anywhere near a shop that can`t test your GPU in one of their test rigs, if they can`t do such a basic thing for you then they are either not very professional or are just after your money, avoid them.
