Hello,

Firstly I am new to the forum so apologies if I have posted this in the wrong place.

Whenever my PC is connected to power the fan and lights will constantly be on, but it will not display anything through the monitor. I have tried using other sockets around my house with the same issue. I have also tested my monitor and HDMI cable which will work with other appliances. Even when holding down the power button down for 30+ seconds it will not power off.

Has anyone run into the issue before? Does anyone know of any possible solutions?
I think it may having something to do with my PSU but want to ask before going out to buy a new one.

Many thanks,

I am running Windows 10
CPU: AMD bulldozer fx-6300
GPU: Nvidia geforce GTX 1070
PSU: 230v

Welcome to PCHF B_Kellz,

Sounds like something has shorted out and possibly taking your hardware with it, you have post some hardware info but we could do with more to best be able to help you, see below;

Please provide information about your computer, is it a custom build or brand name such as Dell or HP, if a brand name, provide the model name or series number (not serial) if a custom build post the brand and model name or number for the CPU, MB, the RAM (including the amount) add on video card if one is used and the PSU (power supply unit) providing these details will enable folk to better assist you.

Thank you for your quick reply.

It is a custom build, but it was one I made about 6 years ago through the assistance of a online website. The only upgrade has been the Nvidia geforce graphics card.

CPU: AMD bulldozer fx-6300
GPU: Nvidia geforce GTX 1070
PSU: 230v (not sure of make can check if needed, but not at home currently)
MB: ASUS m5a78l-m usb3
RAM: Kingston HyperX 4gb x4

PSU: 230v (not sure of make can check if needed, but not at home currently)
Thanks for the additional info the above though is the voltage rating and we need to know the brand and model name etc, see example attachment below.

Thanks for the PSU info and picture (y)

Sorry but even when new over ten years ago that PSU was garbage, you are lucky that it has not gone bang well before now, I can go into explaining just how bad it is but maybe once you have your issue resolved, one thing that I can say now is that the PSU is labelled as 750W but alas when out of the box new it could not even produce 500W, absolute rip off :(

Before we suggest anything, can you tell us the following;

The actual brand of the GTX 1070, not all brands have the same power requirements.

Whenever my PC is connected to power the fan and lights will constantly be
Does the above mean that the computer starts up on its own or just that when you press the power button the light work and the fans spin but the screen is blank.

Dam, wish I knew that before I bought it! Live and learn! I knew it was something that would need upgrading soon.

The attached image should be the one I believe, you’ll have to excuse me as it was a hand down from a friend and I didn’t get it in the original packaging.

As soon as I plug it into the socket it powers on but doesn’t display anything. I can’t even turn it off by holding the power button down.

Will address the most pressing first, this includes not attempting to power up the computer while there is a rather expensive to replace video card in there.

As soon as I plug it into the socket it powers on but doesn’t display anything. I can’t even turn it off by holding the power button down.
Two things that could cause this, a short circuit and a broken power button, the latter could likewise cause a short circuit.

To troubleshoot this you are going to have to remove the MB from the case and do a barebones set up on a large piece of cardboard or a non conductive surface, are you confident enough to do this if we post the steps,

I've been keeping it completely disconnected, hoping its fine.

I'm sure i'll be able to give it a go, if there is anything I wouldn't be confident in I will let you know.

A quick test for you to do first, disconnect the PSU from the MB and other hardware, plug the PSU lead into the wall socket, turn on the power, if the PSU activates on its own, post back and let us know, if the PSU does not activate on its own, follow the steps at the link here to test the PSU, no need to even connect the case fan, let us know any outcome.

No worries, a day or two between replies is easy to deal with (y)

As was suspected, the PSU is toast, the added concern is whether or not the PSU has damaged any other hardware.

Without purchasing a new PSU you only have two options, have your GPU tested in a computer that has an appropriately powered PSU or borrow a good quality brand 500W or above PSU that has the necessary supplemental 8 pin power dongle to power the GPU.

Okay thank you for your assistance, I have a someone I could try and see if they have a PSU I could test with or I may be able to borrow one from work.
Failing that I may just bite the bullet and buy a PSU and go from there.
Will update you if I’m able to make some progress!
Again many thanks for your help

You are welcome and good luck (y)

Edit to add: Corsair, EVGA or Seasonic, will see what I can find and come back to edit this post.

Additional edit, I would normally suggest a Gold efficiency rated PSU for a high end GPU but seeing as yours is used I suggest a Bronze efficiency rated PSU but being honest would strongly suggests that you get the GPU tested before making any purchase. EVGA 500W ATX Power Supply

Sorry got messed around with my delivery only got it today!

All set up now with a Corsair 750w gold standard PSU, everything seems to be working fine. Been running for the last 2 hours, things even seem to be running slightly faster and with a lot less noise coming from the PSU too.

Again thank you for all your help!
