Solved pc will only work in safe mode... please read

bit of background info.. worked in IT 35 years 1/2 in networking- retired 2008
built numerous pc's
but on this i'm fecked.. its a 1150 gigabyte mobo x97x gaming gt Iv'e tried everything i can think of


PC help.
OK.. my sons pc went off when there was a power cut in his University flat/house.
When power restored..everything came back on but his PC.
Totally dead...replaced and tested fuses... changed the power supply with a spare and still same.. replaced power supply back to original.. reset cmos/bios and the power worked again.(seems bios got screwed. Anyway rebooting.. the pc hung after selecting windows to load the system . so restarted in safe mode with networking.support... this works fine and can test for overheating etc etc. .. when tried to boot up again as normal..same result.. always just after or during the login to windows screen.
Tried to do a system repair thinking windows mite be corrupt..but that stuck as well on repair.
anyways.. since it seemed initially to be a bios corruption problem.
I have..
flashed the bios to the very latest via q-flash and usb..
only had one drive plugged in.
used windows memory tester. 100 % ok
also just put one bank of memory in a time.
run chkdsk ok
rechecked all cables.
run the intel proc test ok.
reinstall all drivers where ever poss. and finally
reinstalled windows on a spare ssd.
all the the above tests still fail when tried...but not in safe mode.
(ps i did have it running as a 'fixed pc' for about 45 mins..and just when i thought it was safe to go back into the water...bammm
any sensible help would be nice as it contain his uni work..(i can salvage it in safe mode..but it would be nice if any suggestions as to what could cause it. I'm beginning to think it might be a random motherboard fault. but i cant understand why it doesn't fail in safemode/safemode with networking.. iv'e been at it now for over a day

ok.. update
Still failing but working in safe mode with netwqrk support.
changed power supply thinking it mite be faulty rail.. still fails
changed gfx card.. still fails.
run memtest86 all mem seems ok... used 1 stick at a time.

thanks for reply.. tried all different combo's reinstalling all drivers, different gfx card.. even a new windows install on a spare ssd. beginning to think its a mobo southbridge issue./ capacitor issue. Have a 1150 board being given to me tommorow so ill rebuild.

Done all above... ran for 29 mins in the evening then hung..... seems like a communication fault between southbridge and any onboard chip. Ran program HWiNFO64 that looks at voltages all over the motherboard and instantly hangs. Fortunately... a pal has a brand new msi 1150 board that hes given me so ill use that.

its a long way from the first computer i worked on...it was as big as a house and had a massive 256k or 512k of memory and ran an operating system called george ..... ICLl computers in 1976

well that worked out well...not.... changed everything over........ got the first post beep..then nothing... the whole board just died.....
so fook it..im not gonna live for ever and and upgrade for him while hes at uni will help...( i can cancel drinking.. and eating lol..).......I ordered new power supply...new asus strix mobo sock 1151...7700k processor...... corsair liquid cooler... new ddr4 ram... as big companies like to..they change all sockets/cpus/ram regulary to fill there own pockets... but the worse than that.... i just caught about 5 tash hairs in the ring pull of my beer can and nearly ripped 1/2 my lip off...lol

i always used to be an Asus 'fan'.. and never had a problem really.. but i think the darkside sent me to gigabyte.. and I quite liked them..but now digging deep..seems voltages on the Giga mobo are higher than Asus... not a lot.. but maybe spikes mite kill em... probably just a conspiracy theory...


besides... whatever happened to connecting to points together with a graphite pencil to overclock

yeah.... rebuilt using asus 270e gaming mobo / intel 7700k proc / corsair 80i cooler and 8 gig ddr4 3000mhz ram.... all singing and dancing now and empty bank account nice bios with plenty of things to play around with. . only confusing thing that came about installing windows was the keyboard and mouse died when it came to the 'select county keyboard option. .. turned out that because they are all usb 3 ports on the mobo.. windows 7 install only used usb 2 solution... so in the bios... there is an option to emulate ps/2 ports.
took around 10-15 mins max to install win7 ultimate with all mobo drivers installed.
