Solved PC throttling gigabit speeds

Status
Not open for further replies.
Hi all, first post here. Recently had fibre installed to the house (FTTP on the Australian NBN network) and am on a 1000/50 plan.
Multiple speedtests on my pc (hardwired) result in speeds from 350Mbps - 575Mbps down, 35Mbps up, nothing higher. I have an Nvidia shield (hardwired via a switch) on the same network that pulls 900Mbps + down and 47Mbps up, all day long.
Ive tried a lot of trouble shooting but the results dont change;
  • New cables
  • different router
  • connecting straight into the pc from the NTD (Network termination device - where the fibre terminates in the house)
Im at the point where I think it must the something with the hardware of the pc that is not right, or incapable of handling those speeds. I dont 'need' the additional speed over 500Mbps, it just frustrates me that it doesn't work and I want to know why and try and fix it.

PC specs are as follows:
Coolermaster N300 USB3 case with 420W PSU
Operating System Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
CPU Intel Core i5 6400 @ 2.70GHz Skylake 14nm Technology
RAM Corsair Vengeance LPX CMK16GX4M2A2133C13 16.0GB Kit DDR4 2133 Dual-Channel Unknown @ 1064MHz (15-15-15-36)
Motherboard ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. B150M-PLUS (LGA1151)
Graphics
DELL S2721D (2560x1440@60Hz)
DELL S2721D (2560x1440@75Hz)
2048MB ATI AMD Radeon R7 200 Series (ASUStek Computer Inc)
Storage
465GB Crucial CT500MX500SSD4 (SATA (SSD))
1863GB Seagate ST2000DM001-9YN164 (SATA )
223GB SanDisk Ultra II 240GB (SATA (SSD))

Ethernet connection is via Intel Ethernet Connection (2) I219-V on mobo.

Ive downloaded latest LAN drivers for the board from Asus, but that hasnt made any difference.

Is there something I can do to fix it or does it need a hardware upgrade/improvement?

Many thanks in advance.

So other can better assist you lets get a speccy report. You can skip the PSU informtaion since it is included in the origingal post.

Do not forget to post the make and model of the PSU if this is a desktop.

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

Did some more messing around today ...its definitely this PC as opposed to anything else.
Ran a Cat6 cable from my switch to a very old HP computer (HP Compaq Elite 8300 SFF - ex govt lease cost me $50) that I only use for Zwift - quick speedtest and its hitting 900Mbps + down and 40Mbps + up.

Hoping that its just a case of changing a setting somewhere or something similar to sort this out......all ideas and suggestions welcome!!

Otherwise, wondering whether its worth buying a cheap network card and seeing if that works any better??

Looked at Speccy and noted the following couple of things that will impact network performance.

Avast.

You have a couple of VPNs installed (One is disabled.)

You have a whole load of stuff scheduled to check for updates.

The once highly rated Avast is no longer recommended by most tech forums, it has become a monster in that it foists all sorts of unwanted junk on unsuspecting folk and they can be an absolute nightmare to get rid of, browser plug ins etc, there is also the matter of Avast admits to ‘unacceptable’ sharing of user data: what you need to know

Windows 8, 8.1, 10 and 11 come with an improved Windows Defender, it offers the same real-time anti-virus/anti-malware protection as Microsoft Security Essentials. Windows Defender also shares the same malware signature definitions as Microsoft Security Essentials, and Forefront Endpoint Protection. Technically, Microsoft Security Essentials has not been renamed Windows Defender, or combined with it in Windows 8, 8.1, 10 and 11.

You can uninstall Avast in the Control Panel but should you have any problems see Avast clean removal info here Please create a new system restore point first.

Once Avast has been correctly uninstalled, check to see if Windows Defender has auto enabled and allow it to update and carry out a full scan of your computer.

Get rid of the VPNs.

Cancel any unnecessary scheduled update checkers.

Once done, restart, test by using the computer as you normally, post back with an update when you are ready.

In addition to the above, get yourself a better PSU, the present one can only actually produce 192W and with the amount of drives you have, the additional screen connected to a GPU that requires 400W and 20 amps on the +12V rail if you are not careful your PSU will suffer the same dramatic exit as the same model of PSU here

Many many thanks for you help.

Went through the steps you outlined, think I have got rid of most of the update stuff now (latest speccy... http://speccy.piriform.com/results/4ABbkRLlFypP2WhlHkyApZc )

Wasn't aware of the avast issues, that was an eye opener!

Speed tests are now hitting 900+ down and 30+ up which is great. https://www.speedtest.net/result/13329111451

Will look to upgrade the PSU asap - any recommendations? Might as well give the whole thing a spring clean so if there is anything else within the setup that you think would benefit from an upgrade feel free to let me know.

Once again, thanks for your help, really appreciate it.

Good news and thanks for letting us know that things have improved (y)

Being an older GPU there is no point in paying for a Gold efficiency rated PSU, a proven brand that has the required output, amps and stability will suffice, the EVGA here is the most appropriate that I could find, going up to the least expensive 500W would cost $120+ so made no sense tbh.

You are welcome btw :)
