PC keeps turning on and off on boot, not boot screen.

One day I wake up and the computer is off, presumably due to a forced Windows 10 update. I was went to sleep listening to creepypasta on YouTube.

When I turn it on it goes on and off again three or four times before stopping entirely.

Looking at it, the power supply is old and dusty, and the CPU fan was struggling to spin due to dust.

So, I got a new power supply. It seems to work. The fans spin, the PC powers, and the video card glows.

I also lucked out enough to find an extra Intel fan. I removed the old one, added some fresh Arctic Silver, added the new fan. It runs quickly and silently.

But the result is the same. The ram is only a year old and hasn't been touch, so I don't suspect that.

I'm wondering if the CPU is fried.

I can't get to a boot screen so I have to attack this from hardware alone. I have an interview on Microsoft Teams tomorrow at 10 AM CST, and it looks like I'm about to miss it.
 
Sorry but you have post on a tech forum asking for help but have provided zero information about your computer or it`s hardware, this makes it impossible for anyone to even hazard a guess as to what is going on.

Is the computer a custom build or brand name such as Dell or HP, if a brand name, provide the model name or series number (not serial) if a custom build post the brand and model name or number for the CPU, MB, the RAM ( including the amount, number of sticks and speed ) add on video card if one is used and the PSU (power supply unit) both the original and the replacement, providing these details will enable people to better help you.
 
Thanks. A lot of that information is nearly lost to time. It's an old machine, replaced with new parts of the 12 to 15 years I've had it. Without able to check the system itself for the information, I'd have to tear out its guts to get all the information. I fear that would only cause more issues that I'd have to diagnose before dealing with the primary issue, such as the ram not being in tight enough or a wire coming loose. It can all get very messy very quickly. Close the thread, I'll figure something out.
 
No worries, hope you are able to get it sorted yourself because without having any hardware information no one will be able to help.

Before considering your thread a lost cause;

Do you get anything on the screen at all. a No Signal message for example.

Do you know if there is any onboard video

Do you have a keyboard attached, POST will fail if you don't

Have you tried pulling the CMOS battery and leaving it out a while before putting it back in, that would clear any bad MB settings, if the CMOS battery is as old as the other hardware trying a new battery may help.

RAM not seated properly could cause this and reseating both the RAM and any add on cards are the first checks that should be done followed by trying one stick of RAM, the latter when there is more than the one tick of RAM present obviously.
 
Hello! It does have an onboard video card. It doesn't show anything.

The screen says no signal.

Removed the battery for a while. Nothing changed. Haven't tried replacing it because I don't have another one available ATM.

I do have two sticks of 8 GB RAM. I tried them each individually in each slot. Nothing changed no matter how placed them

You mentioned the keyboard, which is attached to the PC, but I noticed that the LED lights on the keyboard or mouse don't light up when I turn the PC on.

I removed my GeForce graphics card entirely just so it's not part of the equation. I'm just working off the on board unit.

I don't think there are any remaining parts left unchecked except for the CPU itself. I'll also look into getting a new cmos battery.

I may have another CPU present already, but I'll have to look for it. Right now I'm taking a break.

An update if you're curious. Replaced the CMOS battery and the CPU with a back-up I had.

The problem persisted.

I made some calls and am lucky my folks had an unused PC just lying around. The case is small and a lot of stuff is not going to fit, but it will do until I can purchase something more suitable for myself.

Case, Cold but closed.
