Solved PC is overheating

Status
Not open for further replies.
Hey all, I have an 8 year old PC that recently (just this week) started wildly overheating. I use it exclusively for work (I'm a teacher), prepare notes, do classroom, zoom, play youtube videos, play music while I work, nothing too intense, I think, and I have not changed these habits. Lately, just playing a youtube video overheats the PC. For example, right now, just using Firefox it's at around 60° (higher than it used to, at around 35°). If I open a Youtube video it shoots up to 85° or even 95°. Thankfully I've had Coretemp installed for some time and it made me aware of this change. While it hasn't shut down yet, I'm aware that could happen and that it could damage my info and I don't need that.

I'm a mid level user, I have never built a PC (this one was built by a friend), so I'm not keen on doing repairs on my own, I would like to know if I can do something before venturing out into covid land to get it fixed, and maybe know beforehand what is that I need fixed. Back in 2019 it started overheating as well, I got it cleaned up inside and had a new fan installed as my old one had died.

I have already:
> Moved it into an open space.
> Cleaned up dust with compressed air
> Bought and installed a new fan (the most PC surgery I've ever done), it didn't help at all
> Ran malwarebytes (nothing found)

From what I've read the issue may be the thermal paste that needs changing, which seems daunting. I include a speccy snapshot taken when the PC started, please ask for any info I can give you.

So others can assist

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

If this is a desktop include the make and model of the Power Supply Unit

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

Run the following two programs and post screenshots of both results.

Download Speedfan and install it. Once it's installed, run the program and post here the information it shows. The information I want you to post is the stuff that is circled in the example picture I have attached.

So that we have a comparison to Speedfan, download, run and grab a screenshot of HWMonitor (free).

Here's the requested screenshot, yes I have checked the cpu fan, and the two other fans for dust. In fact I replaced one of them for a brand new one just yesterday, and the other one is clean (and it's also recent, had it installed in 2019). Weirdly enough, the fan that wasn't working had stopped back in (maybe) june last year, but it hadn't impacted temperature as far as I could tell.

I'm not at all experienced in computer repairing, but I'm willing to give it a try, I've been watching some videos and they don't make it out to be too hard. But I am worried I will screw something up and make it into a bigger problem.

I will screw something up and make it into a bigger problem
Can Happen to anyone.
Step 1) Buy a Thermal Paste. I use Arctic Silver Click On Me BUT after watching this best Thermal Click On Me I would try This Click On Me
Step 2) Remove Power cord and open Computer and touch metal to Earth yourself or Buy this Click On Me
Static is a big killer of computers.
Step 3) Remove fan and heat sink Click On Me If not held on like this then should be screwed on or post back with pic.
Step 4) Clean CPU ( DO NOT REMOVE) and bottom of heat sink using Methylated spirits or Isopropyl Alcohol (rubbing alcohol)
Step 5) Apply Thermal Paste Click On Me to CPU Everyone has a different method.
The aim is a nice covering Too little = Bad, Too much = Bad (Think Goldilocks and the three bears). Pic attached
Step 6) Reattach heatsink/fan (after the fan and fins are clean) Click On Me
Step 7) Apply Power.
Step 8) Cross fingers and turn on computer and Test. Then close computer backup.
Step 9) report back here all is good and we will send your Tech certificate in the mail.

All Jokes aside this is something that can be done at home.
If no static wrist band ( I would recommend for a newbie) Always touch metal to earth yourself.
Look in my Signature for my main 2 rules.
Cheers

I would like that certificate please! I hope I'm not jinxing it but I believe it worked. I had a little bit of trouble when applying the paste, a bit of a mess but I cleaned it up, closed it back up and now temps are back to normal when watching youtube:

A couple of pics attached showing the state of the paste before and after. Thanks for your help and hopefully this is the end of the problem, for now.

Man that was Quick.
I am glad you got it working
Did you use a anti static wristband ? Which thermal paste did you use ?
I will ask management to post your certificate Congratulations.
Were my instructions clear enough or do I need to amend them
Cheers

PS when you are happy with the results could you mark the post as solved so others may learn

Man that was Quick.
Thank the Amazon gods. I did use a static wristband. I used Arctic MX-4 compound (available on my area for quick delivery and the reviews were good). Your instructions were great, thank you! Specially the intel push pins page, which was fundamental in getting this done. I would mark as solved but I only get two options: In progress and Question.
