PC going to black screen at login

Status
Not open for further replies.
Recently my PC has started freezing where the screen goes black at login and the GPU fans spin at max and get extremely loud. I haven't made any changes to the PC besides downloading a few games prior to the issue starting. I have tried clean booting and removing any dust from the system. I even went so far as to do a fresh install of windows 10 which allowed everything to work properly but the issue persisted when installing nvidia drivers and even java (for nvidia's system gpu identifier) on a separate attempt. Any ideas on what could be causing this? Thanks for your time!

Hi @Miklo and welcome to PCHF :)

Please go HERE and download the portable version of Speccy. Save it to somewhere you can find, locate the file and as it comes as a Zip file use your favorite unzip application to decompress it. Open the newly created folder and double left click Speccy.exe if you have a 32 bit system or Speccy64.exe if yours is 64bit. If you are not sure what your system is click HERE.

Speccy will open and after a short wait will display a summary of your system specs.
  • Click on the file menu.
  • Then click Publish snapshot.

Now that your link has been copied please paste it into your next post. It should look something like the example below :)

BTW: once you have finished with speccy and no longer want it removing it is easy because it is a portable app with no install. Simply delete the downloaded file and folder you created when you decompressed it. Gone:thumbsup:

Unfortunately I don't have a spare card to try out. I tried starting with one stick of RAM and there was no change. I tried doing another clean boot and no changes there. I also skimmed through device manager for any drivers that may have been marked but I didn't see anything there either. Everything runs fine when in safe mode but other than that it still black screens at the login screen

Yep! I installed the latest drivers with no changes. I was able to test the card in another system and the issue persisted so I've got it boiled down to the gpu at this point. I opened the card up to see if it was a thermal past issue and there was nothing out if the ordinary that I could see
