PC froze and couldn't force-shutdown

Not open for further replies.
Hi!

My pc is relatively new but I'm not very knowledgable on these things so I'm not sure how worried I should be.

Summary:
Clicked a youtube video, skipped ahead, it played for like 1 sec and then everything froze (sound, picture, windows).
After trying to get a response out of it and failing to turn it off by holding the power button for almost half a min, I unplugged the cable. I turned it back on, the pc momentarily shut down again but then proceeded to start up as usual.
I've ran some security checks, unplugged the internet and will see if windows needs an update. But besides that, I'm clueless what to make of this.

I've read being unable to shut down might be a BIOS issue but there were no instructions on what to even do about that. If anyone has suggestions on what to do after problems like that, or what the cause of this was in the first place, it would appreciated.

Hello WhatAreWeGonnaDo,

If the computer is a desktop can you post the brand and model name or number of the power supply (PSU).

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

Can I ask that you do not quote every reply as I have to read the full post to make sure nothing gets missed,, thanks.

With behaviour such as this the PSU is often the culprit so it is important that we have the details as soon as you are able to get them, we are stuck without them.

Your hardware all looks good so we only really need to check your temps and voltages, can you first of all though provide a MTB log so we can check for any problems that way.

Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.

Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options;

List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
List Installed Programs
List Devices (Only Problems)
List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Click on Go.

Post the resulting log in your next reply for us.

MTB file is included. The PSU seems to be... "600 Watt Power Boost 80+ Gold Netzteil schwarz, 80 PLUS® Gold zertifiziert"

It's german so I don't know if that helps accurately enough. https://d.otto.de/files/31905688.pdf (PDF from the product page, listing the components and such)

I'm assuming the high CPU temperature is problematic. I tried cleaning the case but it hasn't really improved since then.

Not a good quality PSU I`m afraid and that is reflected by the low cost and short one year warranty period as shown in the specs here a good brand will typically have either seven or ten years warranty, this asides there is nothing at his time to prove that an overheating/weak PSU is the cause of the issue and we need to check further.

Your main problems appear to be Windows related and there is only the one hard shutdown list amongst the errors, notice that you download torrents so have to ask if you have any cracked/pirate software that could be tripping the system up.

Even if that hasn't caused the problem, 90-106°C temperature seems awfully high despite being idle, when most sites suggest no more than 75°C. At this point I'm more concerned about that. Is that related to the PSU?

I haven't used any torrents in a long time and there shouldn't be anything cracked, much less pirated. All that remains from my torrents is an old MMO that doesn't exist anymore and is now run / developed by fans. Torrent is the proper way to download that. People even stream the game on twitch so it's hard to imagine it would cause problems.
I also leave the PC on / sleep mode for long periods. I updated the nvidia drivers yesterday, aside those things, I can't think of anything that could cause the freeze.

Torrents info acknowledged but not quite sure what you mean by "Torrent is the proper way to download that." downloading torrents can be both safe and legal but unfortunately too many bad guys infect them hence why malware removal forums are such busy places.

From where are you getting those temperature readings, if they were accurate you would be smelling smoke by now.

Are you overclocking at all.

Download Speedfan and install it. Once it's installed, run the program and post here the information it shows. The information I want you to post is the stuff that is circled in the example picture I have attached.

So that we have a comparison to Speedfan, download, run and grab a screenshot of HWMonitor (free).

To capture and post a screenshot;

Click on the ALT key + PRT SCR key..its on the top row..right hand side..now click on start...all programs...accessories...paint....left click in the white area ...press CTRL + V...click on file...click on save...save it to your desktop...name it something related to the screen your capturing... BE SURE TO SAVE IT AS A .JPG ...otherwise it may be to big to upload... after typing in any response you have... click on Upload a File to add the screenshot.

Screenshot instructions are provided to assist those that may read this topic but are not yet aware of the “how to”.

The speccy result I posted says so about the CPU temperature, no? Its at the far top, with mine being much higher than the speccy result temperature from another user I saw posting.
When I look over the app, those are usually the values it shows me but I might be misunderstanding.

I'm not overclocking, the PC is still in the same condition I got it in.

Perhaps this answers the Speedfan aspect of your reply. If not, I will provide all the info in my next reply since I'm not at the PC right now.

As for the torrent download - there is no alternative download method available for the game, that's what I meant by "proper".

Also, thanks for all the help and patience with me!

Speccy and Ryzen CPUs do not get along and nine times out of ten you will get anomalous readings.

We need screenshots of both Speedfan and HWMonitor and only done using the method that was provided in my reply #8, HWMonitor is the better of the two but we need to gather as much info for comparison as we can.

You are welcome :)

We are missing some important readings from HWMonitor for some reason one of which Speedfan does report and the reading is off.

Please restart your computer and check the temperatures/voltages in the BIOS, no screenshot is required just make a note of the temperatures, the DRAM voltages and the +3.3V, +5V and the +12V rails on the PSU and post them with your next reply.

NB: BIOS voltage readings.

The readings are not conclusive in the BIOS as the computer is under the least amount of load, if they are higher or lower than what they should be though it does most often suggest a PSU problem.

Well, I know how to get to the BIOS but I have no idea how to look for any of those terms you mentioned "+3.3V, +5V and the +12V rails". I wrote down what seemed to be relevant.
Motherboard: 23°
Voltage: 1403

Do you not have the user manual for your MB, if not, download here

The readings are found in AI Tweaker which in turn is found in the Advanced Mode area of the BIOS, you should see a windows to the right that has all the information that we need, make a note of all temps, voltages and the speed of the RAM as it is given there.
