One game ONLY runs when laptop is plugged into external monitor

I have recently ran into an issue with a game (SMT Nocturne HD Remaster). I was able to play it perfectly using only my laptop screen for a week or so, but then I plugged it into an external monitor and played it. Since then it will only run when it is plugged into the external display. All other games have no issue and I have played them on my laptop screen/external monitor back and forth. I'm even more confused because this game is much easier to run than the other games that still work (Dark Souls 3, Halo: MCC). When the game starts at the load screen it is in 30 FPS and then the load icon gets choppy and drops to 1 FPS. If I stick with it to the main menu the music goes in and out and the graphics are really choppy and still at 1-2 FPS.

Specs:
Dell G5 15
- Intel i7-8750H
- Nvidia GTX 1060
- 16 GB RAM

I have already specified my Nvidia GPU as the main GPU to use, I did this for my 3D graphics settings as a whole and for the game specifically. I also have tried running it as an admin from Steam as well as uninstalling and reinstalling the game. Really at a dead end with figuring this out, any help is greatly appreciated!

Hello

Other than just running for a week, has there been any other changes since that issue... Like do you have some background programs running. More usb inputs connected...etc?

The only thing I can think of is that I sometimes played with a Focusrite audio interface plugged into the USB since my laptop audio jack has been having issues. That's the only difference I can think of besides the external monitor.

so the game was working fine and showing on the laptop screen, then you plugged in an external screen, now when running the game, it only will show on the external screen, disconnecting the external, and the game doesn't show on the laptop screen anymore - have I got that right?

Thats exactly it!

Have you tried the keyboard key combination to swap displays?

May need to do this with the external monitory connected.

Hold the Windows Key and then tap the P key to cycle through.
The weird thing about this is that if I start the game with my external monitor everything runs fine, and once I am past the main menu and playing the game I can detach from the external monitor and only then will the game run on my laptop screen. But if I try to start and get through the main menu on laptop the entire intro sequence runs at 1-2 FPS. I'll give this a try though and see if it lets me get through the intro screen on my laptop!
