Old CD-ROM game on windows 10?

when I've wanted to play old games, I just plug them in and try to install them.
that process usually fails if the game is no longer compatible.

if that happens, I'll load up a Virtual Machine where I have installed XP onto, that usually does the trick.
if you have Win10 Pro, it comes with VM software inbuilt, called Hyper-V. if you have Win10 Home, you can use Oracle's VirtualBox.

What is "XP" that i need to install onto the virtual machine? and how do i go about starting up the game through the virtual machine? i have no experience with this kind of software.

By XP I mean Windows XP.
Being a 32bit OS and running older versions of DirectX, the older games tend to run better on XP.
Or to put it another way, match the age of the game with the Windows version.
