Solved No hdmi signal

Ok so I’ve just upgraded my computer to a MSI x299 motherboard with an intel I9 9820x CPU and installed my pre existing asus gtx 1060 6gb GPU which I was using in my old computer. I’ve plugged in all the wires and everything is recording power however when I go to plug in my HDMI to the monitor it doesn’t receive a signal. The monitor and cord where working the day before on my old computer set up so I know that isn’t the issue.
What I’ve tried
unplugging the monitor for 10 minutes and plugging it back in
Plugging it into a different monitor
Plugging the hdmi into another slot
Plugging in the GPU to another slot on the mother board
Checking all the wires of the mother board
Removing all ram sticks but one.


I can not for the life of my figure it out and I’ve spent about to evening trouble shooting and searching online to see why this isn’t working and have unfortunately come up empty handed.

If any of you have some suggestions that would be amazingly helpful, thank you.

I looked at the easy debug and those red lights are talking me something right off the bat is wrong idk what to do at this point honestly. I’m so tired of playing doctor Frankenstein on this stupid computer.

take it back one more step to basics and remove the video card and plug the monitor into the mobo video port. (although I think the X299 gaming boards don't have any)
if the GTX1060 has extra power requirements, you have those cables connected?
are there any other alternatives, apart from HDMI, to connect the card to the monitor?

Yes you are correct, the x299 does not have its own internal gpu. Also hdmi is the only port both my computer and my monitor will connect to. As I have stated above I know it’s not a problem with hdmi specifically. I’m going to take the computer apart and put it back together again when I get home just to see if it fixed it. That’s exactly what I did when I was having audio issues and that seemed to sort itself out. I’ll post an update after messing with it tonight. Otherwise I will be taking it to a computer shop tomorrow night or Thursday to see if they can take a crack at it. I’ve sunk over a thousand in the past year an a half into upgrading this and I’m not going to just give up.

so it was working on the previous mobo/cpu and after they were upgraded, the same vid card no longer produces a signal.
logic would indicate an incompatibility issue with that vid card. (for some reason)
worst case, may have to upgrade the card, but GTX1060's aren't that old.
have you checked the X299 compatibility list for that card?

Yes I checked it earlier after reading a few threads on some pc part checker site and the compatibility checked out however I might check again when I get home.

It’s currently at a pc repair shop. I’ll update the thread when I know what the issue is and can fix it. I’d like this thread to actually get an answer since every other thread covering this topic that I’ve read here has never had any conclusive answer and they all just get closed.

Those LEDs are telling you two things (1) A Skylake X CPU is detected. (2) There is a problem with the CPU and not the add on video card.

That is somewhat unfair BodilyFunctions as Bruce has attempted to help you with this + as you have taken the time to go through the forums you will have noticed that only abandoned threads normally get closed and this not before the OP has been asked to update their thread but the OP has not done so after five days or more, we offer free help but draw the line at being treated like doormats.

Woah woah woah I never meant it like that. All I was saying is that I’d like the thread to stay open for any future users since all the others go inactive and never get a conclusive answer. I made this thread not just to find help but to also help others in the future. There a many computer problems I’ve had that have been fixed simply by reading a couple threads on some forums about the same topic.

Closing and locking threads as such is our policy.

We can unlock the thread so you can add the information once you get the information all that you as the original poster would have to do is contact one of the Administrator to unlock the post. Also understand that there will be a certain time frame that is allowed for the thread to be reopened and remain open.

Ah I see. I didn’t know that. My apologies for seeming rather rude. I just didn’t want the thread to be locked and I just spent a little over a hundred dollars to get a full diagnostics and repair if possible and really didn’t want anyone to suffer the same fate if possible. Computer stuff is rather expensive.

OK! The problem has been solved. I’ll give a long winded run down. Basically way back when I originally got the motherboard and had an AMD processor (not compatible) I took the metal cover off of the motherboard and tried to replace it with the amd version. I realized it wouldn’t work and put the metal piece that holds the intel processor in back on. Apperantly when I screwed it back onto the motherboard I didn’t tighten one of the screws all the way so a corner wasn’t pressed firm against the mother board. Because of this the processor did not sit firmly in the motherboard and it would not boot. Basically I paid $115 to have a screw screwed in LMAO but that’s what I get for my own incompetence. I’m glad I don’t have to return the mobo Atleast but it’s still just kind of sad. Thankyou for the help with troubleshooting and I wish you all the best!

Glad you got it sorted and thanks for letting us know that you no longer required assistance.

As per my reply #12 (2) There is a problem with the CPU and not the add on video card.
