Solved No Audio on HP Compaq NX7010 [Need Help Troubleshooting]

Hello everyone, I would like to ask something regarding an issue that I haven't got any experience with.

First let me give out a little back story

This is a 15 year old laptop that I bought used for 20 Euros, don't judge me because its the max I can spend, given my budget in this state of the Corona crisis.

When I bought the laptop, everything seemed mint on it except the Battery and the Audio. The battery was dead so I didn't care anyway because the laptop worked fine with the adapter but the Audio didn't work at all. The previous owner told that the audio didn't work and he didn't know why, so im trying to find a way to fix. I was told that It might be a problem with the motherboard however I..

> I installed / Re-installed drivers nothing happens
> Re-installed the OS /Changed between OS's nothing happens
>Device Manager doesn't even recognize any audio hardware on the laptop what so ever. Not even the Mic/Headphone Jack ports work.

In fact the audio drivers don't even finish installing they immediately fail at 50%

Oddly enough tho the button interface for the Volume+ Volume- work perfectly fine, even tho they are on top of the speakers, something that got me intrigued because if there wasn't a supply of electricity to the speakers then the Button interface wouldn't work too no?

Can someone help me figure this problem out? How can I check if its a motherboard problem or if the Speakers are dead fried and can I find a way to fix this issue even if I have to open up and disassemble the entire laptop?

Thank you

-Krys

Hello Krys2000,

Have you tried restoring the motherboards default factory settings in the BIOS in case the audio device has been disabled there somehow.

HP Audio troubleshooter info here

If the above does not help any it suggests that the audio board may be bad, not worth the time, trouble and expense to repair and a far easier and less expensive option would be a USB audio device like the example here along with some external speakers.

Just a fyi, speakers work off an audio signal and not power so it is possible for the increase and decrease buttons to work as they do use a small amount of power.

NB: Noticed the following from the notebooks specs in case you are not aware;

6 Audio line-out jack Connects optional headphone or powered stereo speakers.

#6 above means that the onboard audio chip is not capable of providing an audible signal to external speakers unless the said speakers have their own power supply.
