Looking to put a computer together for my grandson.. I would like something around the $1000-1200 range. He already has a gaming monitor I gave him a year ago, that he uses on his ps5. My choice for CPU is AMD as that is all I have ever used.. I have not put one together in a few years, so not sure which componets are compatible these days. Thanks.

It sounds like it will be predominately a gaming rig, so get the required specs for the games he currently has and use that as your starting point.
Then you need to add a fudge factor to allow the PC to play future games and that's where it starts getting very subjective, very quickly.
All I'll say is get a really good power supply and motherboard - above and beyond current needs as these will still serve him well in years to come.
Then things like memory, graphics and storage can always be upgraded as budget and gaming needs dictate.

Rule for ram
Ram must match cpu
Cpu and ram must match motherboard.
E.G CPU takes 3200 ram
Motherboard takes 3600 ram.
You buy 3200 ram as the 3600 is a waste that your cpu cannot handle.

Intel or AM4 are solid choices for new rigs, I don't think your budget will grab much from AM5 currently- but regardless you should be aware of the extended boot times they tend to have. Something with re-training memory last I checked.
As Bruce and Peter said- A good PSU and proper RAM are a must, I've seen nice rigs use really cheap motherboards and this can usually be fine- but the QOL features on higher end stuff is amazing.
My own additions-
A good case. Something with a mesh front and lots of fans to cool a GPU and hard working CPU. Check this thread for some decent cases I was recommending another member- and check here for PSU requirements of modern GPUs.
Finally, a good air cooler, gaming rigs don't generally need any fancy watercooling nonsense. As cool as it is (pun intended), the reliability that comes with a good air cooler is second to none, and serviceability is great for any future failures when (not if!) they happen. I like the Thermalright Peerless Assassin, but the DeepCool AK620 was also highly rated for performance to price.

Thanks for all the replies.. He mainly plays roblocks and call of duty on his ps5. I did tell him, do not expect a huge high end rig for the price.. But hopefully he will be ok with whatever we or build..

Ya that's why I longer play games.. With the prices of parts these days, plus how quick they become obsolete, it is not worth it.
