Solved New Computer (Win10) and Random BSODs

Status
Not open for further replies.
Hello everyone,

I bought a new computer last month but have been struggling with random bluescreens. The first few days seem to have been fine if my memory is correct but then I started getting BSODs regularly. Here are those that I noted down:

SYSTEM SERVICE EXCEPTION (win32kfull.sys), SYSTEM SERVICE EXCEPTION, ATTEMPTED WRITE TO READONLY MEMORY, IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL, KERNEL SECURITY CHECK FAILURE, KERNEL MODE HEAP CORRUPTION, PFN LIST CORRUPT, DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL (atikmdag.sys), UNEXPECTED KERNEL MODE TRAP

I have already tried the following:

  • Updated my BIOS
  • Ran sfc scannow - no errors
  • Ran memtest - no errors
  • removed all USB devices apart from wireless keyboard/mouse but still BSOD
  • Updated all drivers
  • Reinstalled windows
  • Installed all available windows updates

I also sent the PC back to where I bought it, but there I was just told that everything seemed to work fine when they look at it. The problem is though that the BSODs dont come very frequently. I can go up to two days without any BSODs. At other times they appear every few hours. Also, they seem to happen more often when the PC is idle. I should also note that while I still got dump files in the beginning, I do not get any dump files anymore (for the last few weeks I would say.). In fact, the BSODs remains stuck at 0% and I only see the BSOD because I have disabled restarts at system crash. Before that, the PC would simply reboot.

I would really be grateful for any advice you could offer. I am not sure what else I could do to fix it. I am also unsure whether this might not be a hardware problem after all. I have attached the necessary files and will run hddiag over night.

Thanks!

Welcome to PCHF History658,

Can you re enable the restarts for us so that we get crash dmps.

If the computer is a desktop can you post the brand and model name or number of the power supply (PSU).

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

We understand that these are difficult times but if this does look like being hardware related you really should insist that your place of purchase puts things right so as not to void your warranty.

Not the best of PSUs (VS = Value Series) but it should be ok with this build being that there is no add on GPU.

Speccy mainly looks ok but there looks to be something going on with the RAM.

Memory
Type: Unknown
Size: 14266 MBytes This is an odd amount, can you post the brand and model name or number of the RAM and what capacity the sticks are.
Channels #: Dual
DRAM Frequency: 266.1 MHz This has got to be an error of some sort.
CAS# Latency (CL): 15 clocks
RAS# to CAS# Delay (tRCD): 15 clocks
RAS# Precharge (tRP): 15 clocks
Cycle Time (tRAS): 36 clocks
Bank Cycle Time (tRC): 51 clocks
Command Rate (CR): 1T
Physical Memory
Memory Usage: 49 % This is high memory usage for a computer that is not under any load.
Total Physical: 14 GB
Available Physical: 7.09 GB
Total Virtual: 16 GB
Available Virtual: 7.46 GB
SPD

You are welcome btw :)

Thanks, that is already useful to know.

The Ram is as follows: G.Skill DDR4 Aegis Gaming Series 3000MHz 1x8GB F4-3000C16S-8GISB X2

I am surprised by the memory usage. All I am doing with the PC is office stuff, i.e. running chrome, spotify, dropbox, pdf reader etc. Nothing too intensive I would think.

Would your RAM be two sticks of the RAM here

While we wait on any crash dmp/s;

Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.

Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options;

Flush DNS
Report IE Proxy Settings
Reset IE Proxy Settings
Report FF Proxy Settings
Reset FF Proxy Settings
List content of Hosts
List IP Configuration
List Winsock Entries
List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
List Installed Programs
List Devices (Only Problems)
List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Click on Go.

Post the resulting log in your next reply for us.

Yes, that should be it. This is the image from the seller's website:

Really not sure as to how two 8GB sticks of RAM can be reported as 14GB and only running at 266MHz.

What does it say in the BIOS about the amount and speed of the RAM.

A few problems with Dropbox, Windows, Office and one or two apps, is all your software licenced/paid for.

Okay, I left the computer on and the BSOD did happen again it seems. Though it did not even restart. Had to use the reset button myself. Also, no minidump file was created. These are my mindump setting:

Yes, it is.

What does it say in the BIOS about the amount and speed of the RAM.

This is the Ram-related info I was able to find:

Anything else you would want me to look for?

Thanks!

Apologies for the double post. After your comment about the RAM, I googled it and seems like I needed to use XMP settings on my MB. I did this as follows:

Clipboard01.jpg

Now, this is what I get for my RAM:

No worries about the double post, the info is helpful and coincidence that you did post it as your BIOS picture #4 jumped out at us because of the DRAM Frequency Auto being highlighted, good catch for spotting the XMP setting, Ryzen CPUs are notoriously picky about the RAM and the faster the compatible RAM the better they like it, now we wait.

Should you unfortunately still have BSOD problems please see below;

Your first picture shows that restarts are enabled, can you double check that it not still the case.

To check for and upload any crash dmps;

1. Copy any dmp files from C:\Windows\Minidump onto the desktop.
2. Select all of them, right-click on one, and click on Send To> New Compressed (zipped) Folder.
3. Upload the zip folder using the Attach button, bottom left of the dialogue input box

Thanks for pointing me towards the Ram anyways. Had not noticed this before. I still have restarts enabled, though, as I said, in the past few weeks I have never gotten a minidump out of it. But I will see whether I get another BSOD or not and then report back.

You are welcome and fingers crossed that we have found the cause of the issue.

Do you have the box in the attachment below unchecked now.

Okay, I have been using the PC for three days and have had no BSOD so far. So I am mildly optimistic that changing the RAM settings really fixed things. Phillpower2, thanks so so much for your help. I was already getting ready to buy new RAM/motherboard before posting here, so I am really glad that things could be fixed like this.

Glad we could help, thanks for the follow up and you are welcome History658 :)

Final nag from me, make sure that you create a new system restore point for the now stable settings (y)
