Solved New Build -need mobo guidance

Hey All,

I am currently researching parts to build a new computer from scratch but need some guidance on the mobo choice. I have selected to use AMD R7 2700X cpu so with that said, I am not sure which chip set to get with the mobo. B450? X470? X570? I don't know what would be better and reasonably priced. I will be using the computer for photography mainly but will see some internet use, documents (MS Office), music etc. From what I have read the X570 chip set is the latest and greatest but would the X470 or B450 be a decent choice in terms of performance and then slightly cheaper?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi Smoky83, Welcome to PCHF! :)

Since you are getting an AMD Ryzen 2700X an X470 motherboard will be fine for your needs and will work without problems.

I would recommend getting something like this one depending on your budget, MSI X470 GAMING PRO CARBON AM4 AMD X470 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard.

There is no reason to get an X570 motherboard as they are still fairly expensive and the X470 motherboards will work with your CPU choice out of the box.

Thanks for the reply Evan Omo, any particular reason to use a MSI board? It has been suggested to me to use a Gigabyte board due to the business relationship they have with AMD. I was also considering ASUS, I have read so many reviews on the different brands that my head is spinning. If the brand name doesn't really matter, just as long as I get the features I am looking for on the board, I can move forward with that. But reliability is a big concern for me, no one likes doing things twice!! I am also looking at component compatibility....MB, GPU, CPU, Memory components etc.

Again, any info would be greatly appreciated!!

I've always had good experiences with MSI motherboards. I've built multiple Ryzen computers with MSI motherboards and haven't had any problems. I use an MSI motherboard in my personal Ryzen system and haven't had any instability issues with the build at all.

Asus is also a good brand as well and would recommend them just as highly as MSI. Although I've found that model of the board matters way more, particularly within the specific chipset. The Brand really only comes into play when it comes to customer service and preferences so look at the specific model you are wanting to buy as every brand of motherboard can put out bad boards.

Evan Omo once again thank you for the information as it is greatly appreciated!! I have decided to go with ASUS Prime X470-Pro, Ryzen 7 2700X, G.Skill TridentZ 16GB DDR4 3200 memory.

Now all I got to do is find a video card that I can afford....lol
