Need help with slow laptop

Hello ! Glad to be here in this forum...
I've got this oldy HP pavilion dm1. It was bought with windows 7 home edition. It used to run with decent speed.
It's specs are 6GB RAM / AMD e-450 UPU + Radeon HD Graphics 1.65 Ghz. At some point it started to be laggy, so I tried this and that, reinstalled a few OS's...
Now I use Win 7 Ultimate, and again it's laggy.

I have cleaned junk files/registry stuff.
I use ordinary theme (not Aero).
Removed visual effects;
I have defragmented drives.
There is no overheathing also.

I use 4GB SDHC card with ReadyBoost. (I don't know if it actually works, every now & then the card ejects and reconnects again, by itself) ;
I increased the page file size -> initial : 8000 MB / max: 26000 MB;

So, guys, I hope you can give me some advice or opinion about this all... Have a great day!

I would for starters, load a fresh Win10 and see if that helps. mind you Win7 was pretty efficient anyway.
what OS's have you tried?
when does it lag - randomly, certain games, all the time?

your main issue is simply running current gen software on outdated hardware that was never envisaged to run such software.

Hi,
I tried Win7 home/pro ... It lags mostly when I browse with the web browser.
It takes a lot of time to start an application.
Visual Code studio is very laggy.
Photoshop & Illustrator run nicely until you make more complicated projects.
Interestingly, Half-life 2 runs decently on medium video settings, can be a nice experience to play.
Haven't installed antivirus currently.

I have stopped a few unnecessary processes. Other than that, a few driver processes are running, like mouse pad stuff, cpu cooler, power manager. It's the same situation without them, too.

when you say laggy, do you mean everything is just super slow, or that when watching videos for example, the audio and the video don't match up?

Right...I installed fresh Win10.
I think the PC is a little slower than with Win7.

By "laggy" I mean that generally starting up of apps and using them is slowly. Takes time to open, takes time to save a project.Many times, when app is maximized from task bar it takes like 2 or 3 seconds to open. If I start fast scrolling, like in excel it lags terribly.

It's the CPU mate. It is simply not good.
Is there a way to compensate slow CPU ?
I was considering overclocking, what do you think ?

If the laptop can be upgraded, may be with more RAM, do you think I should go for it ?
