Solved Need help with BSoD

Status
Not open for further replies.
I recently built a pc (first time) and after installing windows I keep getting problems when I play games (using integrated graphics).

Stop codes:
UNEXPECTED KERNAL MODE TRAP (igdkmd64.sys failed)
KMODE EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED (tcpip.sys failed)
DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL (dxgmms.sys failed)

Then, after updating all the drivers I could, what would happen is when I played games my screen would turn black after a while and my sound would just be static. I'd have to force shutdown my pc by holding the power button and start it up again. I haven't enabled any xmp file and after running windows memory diagnostics nothing came up. I assume the cause is something wrong with my drivers.

Could anyone please give me some advice on what to try to fix the problem? It would be much appreciated.

Welcome to PCHF Cryopy,

I keep getting problems when I play games (using integrated graphics).
Two of the three named drivers are graphics related and you can have problems with both if the hardware does not support the requirements of the software that is being run.

We need some further information.

What games are you trying to play.

Please provide information about your hardware, post the brand and model name or number for the MB, the RAM (including the amount) and the PSU (power supply unit) providing these details will enable us to better assist you.

Thank you phillpower2 for your help,

My PC...

MB: Gigabyte H310M S2H rev1.1
CPU: Core i3-8100, 3.6GHz, 6MB cache
PSU: Corsair VS450
RAM: 2 x (G.Skill Ripjaws V, 4GB, DDR4, 2400MHz, CL 15, 1.20V)

(using a downloaded Intel UHD Graphics 630 driver for the display adapter)

I have only attempted to play CS:GO:
res: 1024x786
All graphics settings set to lowest

The errors do not usually occur immediately after starting the game but I have noticed that at higher graphics settings the BSoD generally occurs sooner and more frequently.

I have attempted to install an Intel VGA driver from my motherboard's site-listed drivers but was given errors talking about "compatibility issues" and how I needed to "contact my pc manufacturer for their customized drivers" despite me technically being the "manufacturer". I soon found out that the Intel UHD Graphics 630 display adapter drivers I had installed were termed as "generic" drivers for my cpu that were not "customized" for my pc.

I have since reinstalled windows and downloaded Steam, CS:GO and my MoBo's site-listed drivers (except the VGA driver which still gives errors) and I am still greeted with the BSoD after playing CS:GO for a varying amount of time.
When left to run all night downloading things, the PC never ran into any errors. These have only occurred in game.

DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL is by far the most common stope code I see.

I hope this information was helpful.

You have done a clean install of Windows, did you also do a clean install of the drivers for the MB and starting with the chipset drivers first.

What release version of Windows 10 are you running, 1803 for example.

Got to go out for an hr but will leave you with a couple of things to do etc, back soon;

Make sure that crash dmps are enabled, see small memory dmp info here

Check for any crash dmps following the steps below;

1. Copy any dmp files from C:\Windows\Minidump onto the desktop.
2. Select all of them, right-click on one, and click on Send To> New Compressed (zipped) Folder.
3. Upload the zip folder using the Attach button, bottom left of the dialogue input box

- I'm running Windows 10 ver. 1809
- I am sure I did install the chipset drivers first but not certain
-I have enabled small memory dumps for BSoD

I tried to send the one dmp file in Windows/Minidump to zip but it said "file not found or no read permission". Is that because of my Windows settings (with regards to hidden files and system files etc.)? Or do I need to wait for another BSoD error to occur before any new dumps are added to the Minidump folder?

Haven't managed to get out yet but will need to at some point.

Running version 1809 rules out the VGA drivers not being compatible so the drivers from Intel are deemed to be the most appropriate by Windows, from where did you get the media that you used to reinstall Windows 10.

It is a pity that you cannot recall if the chipset drivers were installed first, it is important to do it this way as it helps to make sure that the other drivers install correctly.

Do you have the latest version of BIOS.

Not sure about the missing dmp file, it may even never have been produced, we have seen empty or unreadable crash dmps before, normally when Windows is broken beyond repair.

We will need to wait on any crash dmps for now as we have nothing here to work with atm, something that you can do is to see if you are able to run Valley Benchmark free, if it will run it will stress test your graphics solution offline, internet gaming is more demanding, even when there is a dedicated GPU being used.

Can I ask that you do not quote every reply, it really does not help and just makes for unnecessary reading, thanks (y)

I played CS:GO again and got the BSoD twice, (both times the stopcode was DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL)
here are the dmp files (attached). thanks again for your help.

-I have not updated the BIOS (I did not want to mess with any firmware) but tomorrow I'll attempt to update the BIOS.
-I created a USB install disk, downloading windows from Microsoft (recently), that is what i used to reinstall.
-I will use the Valley benchmark test and report results.
-I remember installing the chipset drivers early on, likely before any others. But if not, the only driver I would have possibly installed before the chipset would have been the HD audio driver.

If the problem is graphics driver related, would it be worthwhile to connect a graphics card (borrowed from a friend) and try to run games without integrated graphics, using a GPU?

Sorry about the excessive quoting:).
I really appreciate your attempt to help, thanks again.

Please leave any BIOS update for now, Windows and drivers information acknowledged.

Did you follow the exact steps that I provided for the crash dmps, it is not for us to go downloading from elsewhere and I cannot run the debugger tool when the dmps are not on my computer.

Tip
If using a computer and not a mobile phone, please avoid adding multiple posts while waiting for us to reply to your last, edit your last post to include anything that you wish to add, this will ensure nothing gets overlooked which can sometimes happen if a thread has more than one page, it also avoids filling up folks inbox

Will do one dmp file at a time and edit this post to let you know what has been found.

Last crash was caused by Windows component ntkrnlmp.exe, graphics drivers are a common cause of this, the advice here is to check Windows updates.

The penultimate crash was also related to the graphics drivers.

Second crash, video drivers + iaStorA.sys gets a mention, see info here for the driver you should update.

First crash also graphics drivers related.

See attached pic of first dmp.

Thanks so much phillpower2,

Your help has been useful. I think I should be able to solve the problem from here, I have a general idea of what to look for. I'll definitely return to this forum to update you on what the solution is (if I find it).

You have helped me narrow the problem to a point where I think it's just a matter of time to solve and I wouldn't want to waste anymore of your time. You have done exactly what I needed. Thanks so much.

Much appreciated,
Cryopy.

You have not wasted anyones time Cryopy, we are here to help if we can and working with helpful folk makes life easier so thank you (y)
