My PC resolution changed for old games when I played a certain game

Hello there,

I'm new to the forum, but this seemed like the perfect place to get help for the problem I'm having since yesterday.

This only happens with "old" games, not recent ones. For example, "Arcanum" is involved. So I have been playing games like Arcanum, Sacred Gold Editio and Imperium III (not sure if the last two ones are known outside of my country, but they are 2000s games) without much problem, and having lots of fun. However, I wanted to play another old game that I played when I was little, it's called TZAR. I installed it and I played it and everything worked fine.

However, when I tried to play the other games, the resolution had completely changed, and I don't know why, because it changed for all games at once. It looks like this know if I try to play them:

I had to add the black screen since even If captured the screen it only showed the game, so it is a change in resolution. My resolution is 1920x1080, as it is the image. Anybody know why this could have happened? I'm starting to think that is something related with DirectX, since it is something that this games use, but I'm not sure. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall them and nothing, use the compatibility settings and nothing. Do anybody know why this happened?

Welcome to PCHF etheon44,

There are a lot of complaints online about the game doing this to folk.

Have you tried restoring the screen resolution inside Windows, if yes but no change, have you checked for a system restore point that is before the time/date that you installed the game.

Hi Phill,

Than you for the welcome!

I have tried to restore the screen resolution inside Windows indeed, however, nothing changed at all. As for the restore point, my problem is that my security copy is kind of old T - T I know I should do it more often, but I think the last one was 6 months ago. If needed I'll probably end up doing that, but for now I wanted to see if there is anything I could do outside that. Because the change was really sudden. I'm starting to think that it might be the driver's card, but I have it on the last version, and all the other games work perfectly, so that shouldn't be the problem?

For example with the Arcanum, I'm trying to change it's resolution by using a mod that makes it possible, since it is not possible inside the game. However, it breaks it more than fixes it, and Arcanum also doesn't have the compatibility option, not sure why, maybe because it is Steam game.

Until a workaround is found I would strongly suggest that you uninstall this game as it will no doubt do the same thing again.

Not good news regarding the lack of any system restore point, a valuable but painful lesson no doubt learned here :(

Off to work for a few hrs now but will check back later, can you do the following for meanwhile; you are welcome btw :)

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.
