A few weeks ago my monitor got some weird issues. When I boot up my PC, it flashes for a few seconds, and then goes black. When I press the power button on the monitor, it turns on again, and goes black after a while.
I got a new monitor, it works perfectly, and I decided to link the previous one to the PC. When I update things like the way split screen is oriented or switch the main/secondary monitors, it still turns on for a second and then goes black.

Should I just dump it in the trash because there is no hope for it, or should I try to fix it somehow?

The Old monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 920NW, the new monitor is HP Compaq LA1905wg.

BTW when the main monitor goes into sleep mode, when I move the mouse the Old monitor flashes on, too.

may be the backlight on the old monitor has died.
when you turn it on, and it goes black, try shining a torch into the screen, hopefully on a spot you know there should be text, and if you hold the torch just right, you should be able to see the image - if it's a backlight issue.
