I am using Tenda Wireless USB Adapter. It works fine for wifi signals but its mobile hotspot is not working. Whenever I enable mobile hotspot and try to connect my phone with this hotspot it tries to connect multiple times but stops at "obtaining ip address" and disconencts after some time. Any help would be appreciated.

Give us the make/model of the USB adapter.
Hi Bruce. I am unsure, but "Tenda Model U1" and "300 Mbps High Gain Wireless USB Adapter" are written on the box. Kindly do tell me if any other information is required. Thank you.

This seems to be yours; https://www.tendacn.com/product/u1.html
down the bottom of the page, you'll see you can change it from Station Mode which is what you want to be able to get the device it connects to onto your wifi network, or SoftAP Mode which puts it in Access Point mode where it becomes a hotspot for other devices.

This is where my knowledge of this device ends - usually the two are mutually exclusive in my experience. Once in hotspot mode I don't know if it still connects to your modem or assumes your PC has other means of connecting and in turn hotpots that connection out via this Tenda adapter.

Did it come with a manual?

Okay, thank you Bruce for taking the time to see my issue. Actually I tried to convert it to SoftAp mode but the adapter opt-in message tells that SoftAp mode only works with wired connection while I am already using WiFi. Then there is an option of Mobile Hotspot on Adapter application. I tried this one and got the error I have shared in my first post. However I believe this error is something to be related with windows 10 or adapter settings.

As I was thinking - in AP mode it sounds like it expects the laptop to be on an ethernet network getting its internet, then the Tenda can become a hotspot for other wireless devices to piggyback off.

Maybe others have more advice - @PeterOz @Pyro @xrobwx71 @Malnutrition @georgeks
Yes you are right, in AP mode the laptop should be connected with some wired network. But my PC is connected with wifi network so AP mode is not working.

Hi xrobwx71, my phone is INFINIX Note 7 light. It does not seem to have option of static IP for a network. As I read on some forums that setting your phone on static IP would fix this problem.

If you cannot connect then you cannot find the ip range to make it static.

Maybe, maybe not.
I assume that the laptop has an internal wifi connection without the Tenda ui connected?

Hi PeterOZ, actually this is Lenovo core i5 7th Gen desktop PC and does't have internal wifi without Tenda adapter connected. Sorry for misunderstanding.

then it will not work as a hotspot without connecting to a wired network

correct
Are you connecting with a cable?

correct

No, I am not connecting with cable. My first purpose to use Tenda was to receive WiFi signals from the router. Now I thought if I would use Tenda as mobile hotspot then I can use other devices as well as Tenda would recreate the weak signals.
But it does not seem possible without using wire from router to the pc with Tenda.

You cannot use Tenda that way.
You have to have an internet connection that you then hotspot.
Hotspoting a phone to a mobile seems an odd way to do things.
Why not hot spot your phone directly to your wifi?
