Maintain security

Suggest you use a realtime security of your choice, and then run another, say Zemana, malwarebytes, or Emsisoft etc as a second opinion scanner, even a couple of second opinion scanners if you are paranoid.

Emsisoft write up.

NEVER EVER run two realtime security apps at the same time.

There is no one best security app, never. They will all miss something sometime and they will all pick up a false positive sometimes, which is the reason for my suggestion above.

Have a look here, this is a reliable test site

Skip the PC maintenance cleaners - they can do more harm than good. You have no idea sometimes what is removed and it might be something that is needed.

It is better that you manually clean out what isn't needed. (Clear browser cache, use something like Revo Uninstaller or Geek Uninstaller to remove programs you no longer use). When I'm done with files I erase rather than delete so I gain free space and the files have a harder time being recovered.

the thing with Personal Computers is just that - they are personal.
one solution for one will not fit for someone else.

personally, any 'good' PC cleaner will do an excellent job, and it's hard to go past CCleaner from Piriform.
their last 4 releases have been a dog's breakfast, so I suggest sticking with v5.40 for now (available from FileHippo).
don't run the registry cleaning portion (never use a reg cleaner in fact without a strong reason).
PC cleaners should only remove temp files, caches, left-over install logs and stuff like that - no personal files are ever touched.
that's certainly the case at least with CCleaner.

another good cleaner is the inbuilt MS one. but it needs tweaking to include all the possible cleaning areas.
start an elevated command prompt and type cleanmgr /sageset:1 and tick all the boxes and hit OK.
then type cleanmgr /sagerun:1 and it'll go through all of those cleaning categories.

as for AV software, as shown in the link provided by Gus, they really are all on a level playing field these days. Just half a point between nearly all of them.
so with that in mind, I ditched my Nortons subscription about two years ago and just use the Win10 inbuilt MS Defender - why pay for software when a free, equally as good one is already installed.

but with security these days, it's not about one form of protection. you should have layered security.
I use MS Defender, Malwarebytes Premium, a modified HOSTS file by MVPS, adblocker in Firefox, and SpywareBlaster to set the killbits.
