Lost USB 2, then power to the computer

Accounts shows my name and registered email address, same as my MS dashboard online. Network is "private network." User account type is Administrator. Access work or school has no entry, just "Connect."

The persevering MS “research engineer” in the Philippines spent a couple of hours on the org problem and eventually came up with a solution — deleting four policies statements or items from the registry. After that, the PC Health app ran.

I’ve come across a few more instances where permissions needed adjusting or trustedinstaller brought in, and I assume there will be more. The biggest headache has involved hardware. When I took the computer in for dx, I asked the tech to check the case’s front USB ports, since 3 of the 4 had apparently quit working, which was where this saga began. Well, he faked it, said they were ok, so with the rebuild I didn’t get a new case. And for other reasons having to do with his lack of communication, he told me that my business was no longer welcome. Fortunately, his tech boss and another more experienced hand got involved, checked the ports — one 3.0 and 2.0 are dead — and jerry rigged the case wiring to add some extra USB ports on the back of the case. Not a perfect solution, but workable under the circumstances. In addition, I have six SSD/HDDs + a CD/DVD player, but most of the new 12th Gen mobos have fewer SATA ports, typically four. So the initial tech suggested a network host adapter card, which turned out to be an erroneous idea, and his boss instead suggested an external multi-drive enclosure, which turned out to be relatively noisy vs. my quiet PC. A little checking around found SATA cards are available for a fraction of the price, and one arrived today that solved the matter. So it seems just about everything is back in order.

I’ve built and, within my limited knowledge, repaired my own computers since a bad experience twenty years ago. This episode says I need to stick with that to the degree possible.

A blessing and curse of my life is being one of those people who somehow find the “hole”or dysfunction in organizations and operations, and are more likely than not to say something about it. Hundreds of times, from small things to much bigger ones, such as USAA credit card’s payment processor in the late 1990’s sitting on cardholder payments for up to 12 days, hence leading to interest charges. I’m not always right, but a baseball player would be walked every time if they had my “batting” average.
