Lord of the Freeze: Return of the Freeze

Not open for further replies.
Hello PH Help, remember me? I'm the guy that posted this thread over here-
https://pchelpforum.net/t/computer-freezes-up.14661/

I'd like to once again thank you guys for all the help, my computer has most certainly been running better than before due to it. Some problems still came up yes, but I've managed to knock those out myself. The things that happened in the thread above happened due to a myriad of things, but that's not important now.

I have one last problem that I need a bit of help with.

So, my computer no longer gets the severe slowness or crashing it got from before. But it does still seem to slow down/freeze in a way that's sort of familiar to me, it sometimes cleares up (if not I need to do a full-on restart, oddly enough voice chat will still be functional for a while of not indefinitely) within a few seconds. It really sucks when it happens during gameplay for obvious reasons, so I've been monitoring my CPU and memory usage at all times now (via task manager and resource monitor). Fair enough my CPU and memory are at acceptable levels at pretty much all times and I was finally able to pinpoint the problem, Disc Activity - Highest Active Time. For some reason (only notice while playing, because it's only ever obvious then) highest active time shoots up to 100% and this is when my computer craps up.

I've seen this
https://social.technet.microsoft.co...activity-in-resouce-monitor?forum=w7itproperf
and a couple of other solutions, but I'm not really sure how to go through with them.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, so please feel free to move it if not. I'm just assuming it could be a hardware problem too and that I might need to replace something (I would rather not, if possible).

We will want to check the condition of your hard drive.

Download HD Tune and save the file. Install HD Tune and restart it after installation. Then go to the tab Error Scan , select the hard drive you want to check and press Start . The check can be quite time consuming take depends on the size of the hard drive check. Take a screen shot of the result and save it. Upload it to IMGUR for us. Post the link here.

Do Not tick the quick scan!!

Speccy Scan.

  • Please go here and download Speccy.
  • Install and run the program.
  • Upon Completion:
  • Hit File
  • Publish Snap Shot
  • A link will appear, post that link.

Hello folks,
Couple of observations from the Speccy link;

RAM
8.00GB Single-Channel DDR3 @ 798MHz (9-9-9-24) Having only the one stick of RAM means that you are not getting the benefit of dual channel capabilities (1600MHz).

Power Profile
Active power scheme: High performance This is a form of O/Cing that can cause instability/overheating etc, change it to balanced in your power plan.

Stopped: Nalpeiron Licensing Service An intrusive software commonly associated with Norton AV, Logitech and remote desktop assistance amongst others, often installed without an end user being aware, not a problem if you know it`s there.

Physical Memory
Memory Usage: 20 %
Total Physical: 7.96 GB
Available Physical: 6.31 GB
Total Virtual: 16 GB
Available Virtual: 14 GB Your pagefile is too large, it should only be 1.5 Xs the amount of physical memory that you have, 1.5 Xs 8GB = 12GB, this bad setting will not help data transfer speeds between the RAM and HDD, correcting this will not make the computer suddenly lightening quick but will make an improvement.

Voltage
CPU CORE: 1.008 V
MEMORY CONTROLLER: 1.776 V
AVCC: 3.232 V
3VCC: 3.216 V
VIN4: 1.480 V
VIN5: 1.672 V
VIN6: 0.752 V The voltage readings are inconclusive but are showing a high reading for the memory controller, again will come to this below.

Partition 1
Partition ID: Disk #0, Partition #1
Disk Letter: C:
File System: NTFS
Volume Serial Number: 8E546C73
Size: 465 GB
Used Space: 371 GB (79%)
Free Space: 94 GB (21%) You are getting low on free storage space on the C: partition, not critical atm but do not let it get any lower.

Suggestions;

Post the brand and model name or number of your PSU for us.

Create a new pagefile;
Open My Computer. At the top right, there is a search field...type pagefile.sys and click the search icon. In the search results, right click on the file (pagefile.sys) and choose Delete...confirm the deletion.

Restart your machine. A new pagefile will be created automatically when the machine starts.

Please take expanded screenshots and only use the method below to attach them.

Download Speedfan from here and install it. Once it's installed, run the program and post here the information it shows. The information I want you to post is the stuff that is circled in the example picture I have attached.

If you are running on a vista machine, please go to where you installed the program and run the program as administrator.

(this is a screenshot from a vista machine)

Download then run HWMonitor and post a screenshot so that we have a comparison to the Speedfan results, details from here

To capture and post a screenshot;

Click on the ALT key + PRT SCR key..its on the top row..right hand side..now click on start...all programs...accessories...paint....left click in the white area ...press CTRL + V...click on file...click on save...save it to your desktop...name it something related to the screen your capturing... BE SURE TO SAVE IT AS A .JPG ...otherwise it may be to big to upload... Click on the Upload a File tab then after typing in any response you have... click on reply like you normally would.

Screenshot instructions are provided to assist those that may read this topic but are not yet aware of the “how to”.

Information only;

Please note that in order to avoid data corruption and/or mechanical HDD failure for you must always have a minimum of 20 to 25% of the HDDs or partitions overall storage capacity available as free space where Windows is installed and between 10 and 15% of a HDDs overall storage capacity available as free space if there is data only on it, the free space allows for information to be copied to and from the drive efficiently particularly important for Windows file swapping and the installation of OS and AV updates.

Not having the above can render a computer inoperable if the HDD concerned has the OS on it due to the MBR (Master Boot Record) becoming damaged/corrupt, please see information here and here

lol, I read all of that in an Arnie voice.
Anyway

RAM
Sucks, this is what I got. So I just make-do with it.

Power Profile
Changed it to balance. I've had it on high power for as long as I can remember though. Hope it hasn't done too much damage (and racked up my electric bill)

Stopped: Nalpeiron Licensing Service
I have no idea what this is actually, so I guess it'd be a good idea to remove it somehow.

Physical Memory
Changed min and max to about 12000mb, that should be good right?

For my PSU, it's from Ark Technology. I THINK the model is ATX P4, as the rest of the stuff on there is just voltage.

For my pagefile, I actually couldn't find it. Nothing came up on my computer for pagefile.sys after the search completed multiple times (if it means anything, my index something is off). Also, this happened during the searches and cleared up after.

This one randomly happened

Honestly, these aren't frequent but it'd suck if these happened at the wrong times.

Also, reading up a bit on those, I have indeed seen the following before

(Not mine)
It hasn't happened in a long time though.

If you do remove it your Logitech mouse may act up.

We can check the RAM/pagefile info with an updated Speccy link which I have asked for down the page.

The HDD looks ok in HD Tune but can we take a look with CrystalDisk as well.

Check the HDD with CrystalDiskInfo 7.0.0 Standard Edition which you can download from here once done grab a screenshot (possibly two) of the results and attach to your next reply for us.

Poor quality brand and possibly quite old, can you remember how old it is.

In addition to the above can you post an updated Speccy link for us + the bottom half of he HWMonitor screenshot that is missing above.

The PSU can't be older than 3-4 years. Been thinking of getting a new one but money is kinda tight right now. Would rather just keep this PC alive for as long as possible and get a brand new build at some point.

"bottom half of he HWMonitor"
Now I feel like an idiot, made sure not to forget that for CrystalDisk. My monitor is smaller than the average modern day laptop screen so..

Your HDD also looks fine in CrystalDisk so that random warning that you have had in the past could be either a loose/faulty SATA cable or a problem with Windows.

Good brand PSUs normally have a 3 year warranty as a minimum but lesser quality brands PSUs only 12 months, I never use or suggest anything less than a bronze efficiency rated PSU and being quite honest using anything less is like playing Russian Roulette, saving $20 on the price of a cheap PSU can cost you dearly when it goes bang and takes one or all of your other components with it, the crux of it is that the present PSU should have been replaced as soon as out of warranty but ideally not purchased in the first place.

Observations from Speccy;

Power plan still show to be high performance;

Power Profile
Active power scheme: High performance

The size of the pagefile has increased, use the Microsoft procedure below to set it to 12000MB/12GB

  1. Open System by clicking the Start button
    11899_en-us_8

    , right-clicking Computer, and then clicking Properties.
  2. In the left pane, click Advanced system settings
    12001_en-us_2

    . If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  3. On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
  4. Click the Advanced tab, and then, under Virtual memory, click Change.
  5. Clear the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives check box.
  6. Under Drive[Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file you want to change.
  7. Click Custom size, type a new size in megabytes in the Initial size (MB) or Maximum size (MB) box, click Set, and then click OK.
Note
Increases in size usually don't require a restart for the changes to take effect, but if you decrease the size, you'll need to restart your computer. We recommend that you don't disable or delete the paging file.

Bottom part of HWMonitor looks ok (y)

Word of caution, to prevent unauthorised changes being made to your computer enable the User Account Control as Speccy shows it to be disable which is very unsafe.

Windows Security Center
User Account Control (UAC): Disabled

Sorry for the late reply.

Power Profile: Changed for good, I could have sworn I changed it last time.

I did the pagefile thing correctly before, it seems. No changes need be done.

UAC notification thing is set to always.

Alright so, this is just a stretch but I think its worth a shot. I believe I might have some sort of rundll32.exe problem/error/virus? Vague lead to go by, but I've got nothing else at the moment. I ran into a bluescreen and into a select proper boot device blackscreen after, before it did this the computer basically wouldn't open anything or finish loading anything, resource monitor showed the 100% disc activity highest active time thing (and it wouldn't end this time) and then the processes on the list went blank (with the 100% active thing still going on). Fired up my computer again, look at disc activity on resource monitor. The thing I see that always strike me as odd is something called TrustedInstaller.exe, a quick google shows that it's apparently normal though. For the first time however, I noticed something called rundll32.exe which is also normal. But apparently it tends to run into a bunch of problems or something? A few quick skim reads lead me to a system file check and this is what came up.

I can post the log it took, if you need. It's really big though.

If it does look like malware I will need to ask a malware removal expert to advise you as I deal with tech and OS related issues only.

Forego uploading the CBS log for now and do the following;

Download then run the Windows All in One Repair (free) from here, disregard the malware guidance but follow the other steps to the letter and in particular ensuring that you first create a new restore point and perform a proper Windows clean boot before running the repair, details for the clean boot here.
