Question Laptop not turning on

I have a hp 840 elite book. It's refurbished, couldn't tell you what year it is, ( the laptop I mean) but I got it in 2019. I have replaced the battery twice, the first time because it wasn't charging and retaining the charge, the second time being I couldn't take the charger off the laptop or it wouldn't stay on. My charging habits probably didn't help ( removing the charger when it wasn't completely charged, leaving it to charge over night, short charging, ect ect).

Recently however, I can't turn it on period. I can't get a loading screen to see if I need to charge it or see what's wrong eternally. The little lights on the edges of the keyboard flash blue and orange, not settling on one color, my caps lock light won't turn off no matter how many times I press the button, the sound and wireless buttons flash and I can't turn those off, my and are on high and turn off then on and the power button glows like it's trying to turn on but then stops. Then tries again an stops.

I have taken out the battery, plugged in my computer to charge, nothing. Took out the memory, nothing. Took out the hardware. Nothing. Googled the problem, seems like people have had this issue before, same symptoms with the same hp elite book. Problem was with the power supply, aka new charger. Went out, got one for 40 bucks, made sure it was the one I needed and plugged it into my computer. Worked for a bit, the flickering stopped long enough I thought everything was solved and attempted to turn my computer again only for it to flicker and not turn on.

I am so lost. What should I do?

HP released the 840 range late 2013.
do you love the unit enough to sink more money into it is the question.
it's hard drive can be removed and placed into an external enclosure a) to recover data off then b) to use as a backup device.

I have to agree with Bastet, you are most likely looking at a hardware failure, either the mainboard or the power circuit board in the laptop.
find those will be the first challenge, new will be out so then it'll be a hit and miss affair with 2nd hand parts.
then there is the labour to replace those parts - if you have never worked on laptops, they can be right little bastards to pull apart, with dozens of screws and components that need to be pulled out just to get the the one you want.
some you get into from the bottom, some from the top, some require both ways.
if you don't feel confident, then you'll be up for extra costs getting an 'expert' to do it.

long story short - perhaps this is the death knell for the laptop!

Ohhh man. Thank you all for your advice. I looked into getting a new motherboard, which is at least 150 something dollars for this model. I really don't have the money for that on top of the fact that a) I can't prove that it will work after paying that much ( I spent 40 dollars on the charger and that didn't get me anywhere, so you're right about sinking money into the thing) and b) I have no idea how to take it apart safely. I am looking into buying a new laptop.

Since this is my experience with refurbished computers, should I stay away from them when looking at computers to purchase and buy new?

I would consider a new PC. Some stores allow you to purchase over several months or years depending on circumstances.
I had an HP laptop which did the same thing (turned on then off again), took it to a local repair shop who tested the power & came to the conclusion it was the motherboard. As the laptop started out with Vista & went through to Win 8/8.1 & 10 I decided on a new laptop from PC Specialist.
