Hi, I have an issue with my laptop after login, the screen is constantly blacking out and resetting, as if it is stuck in a booting loop.

It doesn't affect the sign-in screen, only once you log into any account. I have tried loading the PC up in safe mode but the same issue occurs.

Please see attached video of the problem (note the message on the loading screen says "Scanning and repairing drive (\\?\Volume{4042ff38-6877-420b-8360-5fca08679343}): 100%" which started appearing at the same time as the error).

This has only been happening since yesterday, and to my knowledge the PC hasn't gone through an update in the last 48 hours.

I'd really appreciate any help on this, thanks in advance 🙂

Edit: I can't seem to get the video to upload, but it can be seen on this Reddit post:

can you post as much of the specs on the PC as you can.

One of the first things that come to mind is the display card.

Could also be Hard Drive failure.

Is the portable system plugged into the mains and have you tried it without the battery connected.

are you able to get us a speccy report

So other can assist let get a speccy report.

Do not forget to post the make and model of the PSU if this is a desktop.

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

It's an Erazer Model No. MD60694

Device Name: DESKTOP P98EMQG
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7300HQ CPU @ 2.50GHz
RAM: 8.OOGB
System Type: 64-bit operating system, x63-based processor

Windows 10 version 22H2
OS build: 19045.2486
Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.4190.0

Weirdly, I've discovered I can still acces the files via task manager and starting a new task, and have been able to access the details that way, as well as access the internet. The desktop continues to do it's looping in the background but the folders and files are working fine, if a little slower.

Speccy URL: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/4dEuo8kGckaeOZb7rkANJ7u

Error continues whether computer is plugged in or on battery, haven't checked unplugged at full charge yet though.

Will take me a bit to go through the speccy report here are some things that you can attempt and look into and in no particular order.

While you still have access to the system STRONGLY suggest you BACKUP personal files that you do not wish to lose on to external storage device.

Create a new user on the system and see if that user has the same issues.

Run a System File Checker

See if the same happen in Safe Mode and Clean Boot.

For right now here are some things that are seen off the bat.

Your C drive need to be cleared out and maybe replaced to small should be minimal 250 GB still that tis cutting it on the small side.

Partition 1
Partition ID: Disk #1, Partition #1
Disk Letter: C:
File System: NTFS
Volume Serial Number: 8E4CF440
Size: 117 GB
Used Space: 101 GB (86%)
Free Space: 15.3 GB (14%)

For Windows to be able to run efficiently and to be able to update you need to have between 30% and 35% of the partition or drive available as free storage space at all times, if you don`t you risk Windows becoming corrupt or not being able to update which puts you at risk of malware attack.

Then there is also reserved around 7-10 GB.

Not a major thing just FYI
RAM
8.00GB Single-Channel DDR4 @ 1197MHz
Physical Memory
Memory Usage: 59 %
Total Physical: 7.88 GB
Available Physical: 3.20 GB

Suggest getting a matching RAM to have the system running Dual Channel and not Single Channel. Which can also sometimes cut the speed of the ram in half as well which is why you should always use RAM in pairs.

Almost 60% is used by the system leaving very little for the system to allocate for other things.

Thanks for these. I have done a space saving check on my C drive, and one of the ways of saving 7 gig is by removing old records of previous updates - however I am assuming I want to avoid that for now in case I need to restore?

Regarding your other suggestions for checks, I tried a Clean Boot in Safe Mode and still have the same issue - I have not tried setting up a new account yet. I also tried a File Checker, which cancelled halfway through the "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth" command due to a corrupted file. Here was the message displayed, in case it is of any help identifying the issue:

C:\WINDOWS\system32>DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Thanks again for all your help on this.

I have now run and sfc /scannow command and it has bounced back an error that could not be fixed. message is the following:

"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
For online repairs, details are included in the CBS log file located at
windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline
repairs, details are included in the log file provided by the /OFFLOGFILE flag.
"

I have attached a copy of the CBS log

The reason for the files corruptions is due to lack of space on the C drive.

Yes, and no without clearing the space cannot say. the system will continue to act like crud as long as there is little space for actions.

Plus, you C rive is only 128 GB and is way to small minimal for Windows suggested to run properly is 250 BG- 500 GB.

If you are not going to use it turn off Hibernation.

Not including the desktop image has to load and all the files and icons there that eat memory.

Thanks again for your help on this -

I have cleared out the clutter from my C: drive (I had nearly 10gb in my downloads folder for some reason 😲) I now have 31gb clear and it has made a difference to to load times, and bizarrely the charging port as well, which seems weird to me. I also did a forced reboot to access the recovery menu, and it told me the issue was with the \windows\system32\winload.efi system, which was corrupted or missing.

I have done some research and discovered a way around it by accessing the UEFI menu and disabling the secure boot - and the pc now loads correctly.

However, I am concerned that an option called "secure boot" is currently disabled on my laptop. Are there any serious ramifications for this, and is it possible to repair or replace the winload.efi file without a PC Reset?

What is in that folder?

Anything that you and or someone has downloaded goes there.

Can attempt a system file checker.

What is the issue with the winload.efi

Post a new speccy report

Lets also get Mini Tool Box Report for the errors

Have you tried running a ping and or trace route to the server?

Let's see if the error message shows us by running a Minitoolbox report.

You will need to download to a working system then use an external device to run on the affected system.
Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop. Right click on the file and select Run as Admin

Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options.

Select all

Click on Go.

copy and paste the contents of the file called MTB.txt or attach the file to your next post.
