Hello again

Proper question this time.

HP Twain error.

I just bought a HP ScanJet G4010 Flatbed Scanner cheap on eBay. Expected (as I also use a HP Notebook) to just plug and go. No such luck!

Tried and tried and eventually lit on HP Print and Scan Doctor that checks everything out. It gets to the Twain portion of the online check and tells me that there is a problem because some other program is using the facility I need to get the scanner to work. Apparently, this is a fairly common thing (I googled the fault and found a whole stream of people with the same problem who had contacted online HP 'Help', and NONE of them had received any help or advice they could use.

Out of curiosity, I plugged the scanner into my wife's laptop and guess what? The scanner immediately loaded and works perfectly.

I suppose I could just carry on with her laptop, but that would mean (for me) the horrors of the Windows 8 quagmire when it comes to manipulating files and folders. I don't like Windows 8 (can you tell?). My own laptop has XP Pro and I'm really happy with it.

I've checked the Twain folder in Windows and there is a wiatwain ds file there and a hpqgndsfile (with a copy).

Am I right in thinking I might just be missing a driver?

Hi Bernie, yes you will need a driver for it, but if windows cant find and install one try installing VueScan. There is a free version that only works with the wizard but should do all you need. I'm yet to find a twain compatible scanner it doesn't work with and I have never installed Windows or the scanner manufacturers software. Have a look HERE.
Good luck with it:)

Thanks, Gus. I did look at Vuescan, but I got some sort of warning coming up from my Avira thingy. I'm going to try it anyway. Should I get rid of the other stuff from HP that I installed?

Hi Gus

Well, I ended up installing VueScan and now I'm a happy little bunny, scanning away like crazy! Didn't realise I'd have to pay for it, but what the hell! Thanks for your help.

By the way, the warning I got wasn't from Avira - it was from Microsoft, but since they contributed to the problem in the first place, I decided 'Sod 'em'!

Hi Bernie, VueScan is a commercial program but you can use a slightly cut down version for free. If you bought the paid version I'm sure you will be a happy camper. I too have the full program like yours, and the scanning options are almost endless, far more than HP have ever provided with their bloated rubbish. Yes you can remove any HP scanner stuff you've installed, and you will never have to worry about HP, or other brand, twain scanner drivers again. I even use VueScan for my all in one printer/scanners, currently Epsom and HP.

Hi Gus. Yes, I bought just the Standard version (didn't see an option for free!!). Only $25, though, so a bargain as far as I'm concerned.
Now, the next problem is to get Windows Movie Maker sorted out (for another forum, I guess).

Anyway, thanks again for your help.
