My windows 10 seems to be infected with pop ups etc. My pc performance utility informs me that my disk is fragmented and cluttered. I have in the past downloaded software etc. I wish to simply do a complete reinstall of windows. How can i go about doing this?

Welcome to PCHF msa969,

See tutorial courtesy of Shawn Brink here

Please note that based on what you are telling us in your OP you must choose the Remove everything option else you may still have the same problem as you have now.

Do the clean install and let us know how it goes, if you still have problems you may need to have one of the security experts take a look as some malware is so deep rooted that not even a format and clean install of Windows resolves the issue/s.

I have reinstalled windows 10 and it seems to be working faster. However my sound card is not working. I have tried plugging in headphones but still it is not working. I have a really important webinar tomorrow and need sound for this. Any help on how to resolve this would be much appreciated. So far tried the following. Cortina, however she is unable to detect my microphone. Device manager > sound, video and game controller. Windows 10 is not detecting my sound card. I have installed Intel (R) display audio which seems to be windows default, right click update driver and various other stuff but sound is just not working.

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

Speccy tells us that the computer is the notebook type, post the brand and exact model name and/or number for us so we can do some research/

OEM/brand name computers provide installation disks that have specific drivers on them which have to be installed in a set order and normally starting with the chipset drivers first.

Tip
If using a computer and not a mobile phone, please avoid adding multiple posts while waiting for us to reply to your last, edit your last post to include anything that you wish to add, this will ensure nothing gets overlooked which can sometimes happen if a thread has more than one page, it also avoids filling up folks inbox, it would also help if you did not quote every reply.

You can get the drivers that you need from here

You will need to insert the model or serial number + the version of the drivers that you require, 64-bit Windows 10 in this instance.

I have downloaded a zip file and installed drivers for my sound card and it made my computer crash. My computer would not restart so I had no alternative but to do an overnight full installation of WIndows 10l. This time I chose full install rather than reinstall, and my sound is still not working. On the link I was given to download drivers for my laptop there was a second set of drivers, i am going to try this and fingers crossed this time it will work for me.

From the web address i was recommended:

when I entered my serial number it was not being recognised. As a result I must have downloaded what my brain thought will be an alternative replacement.

Toshiba SATELLITE C50-A-19T ; serial number YD155953S

Since my serial number was not being recognised by the recommended website I have searched on the internet and I have tried two other drivers from this location but these did not work either.

The computer is still stable after the new driver installation but the sound card is still not being picked up.

Run DriverMax to see if any driver updates are suggested.

Please note that you are only allowed to download two drivers a day for free and be sure to uncheck the “install AVG toolbar” option box.

Remember to always create a new restore point before updating any drivers.

Thank you for the recommendation to downloaded DriverMax. I have installed one of the drivers from a list of drivers DriverMax states is to be missing from my computer. My computer seems to be working fine other than sound. I have been running the laptop the whole day with the new driver recommended by DriverMax and the laptop seems stable. I will install another driver tomorrow and again monitor the laptop performance.

I have downloaded all the drivers, DriveMax recommended for audio. Yesterday I had uninstalled DriverMax because I did not like the pop-ups. I did not know what an IDT was until it occurred to me I should search for its meaning on Google. Integrated Device Technology, unfortunately we don't have the luxury of hindsight, but if I recall DriveMax did not have any recommended drivers to do with IDT.

I have purchased an external usb sound card as a temporary solution. The laptop works fine apart from sound, it would be silly to get rid of it for this reason. The USB sound card is a bit annoying as laptops by their very nature encourages mobility so a usb dongle hanging from it is a bit tedious. I am always concerned I might either break the usb slot, and/or headphones, and/or microphone. I sometimes have to create podcasts which requires a microphone - previously when the sound worked, the built-in sound card did not need an additional microphone.
