I have what is probably a very dumb question. But first a little back story. About a year ago my small town finally got gigspeed fiber. I am pretty sure I was one of if not the very first in my neighborhood to get it installed and working. At first it was FAST!!! The installer brought the fiber wire into the house and then came in my media room where it was to be hooked up to their supplied fiber modem. They use a Calix 803G.

They also offer a router but when he saw that I already had a router he told me that mine was better. I have a Netgear Orbi 850 mesh router with 1 satellite that is located at the other end of the house. My issue is that when it was hooked up at first my wired PC was getting speeds of around 940 Mbps down and about 940 Mbps or so up.

Ping was 3 ms on the wired PC. On all wireless devices like my phone and iPads I was getting about 600 Mbps down and up with a ping of 5 ms. In the year since, speeds have lowered a bit and ping has risen. I don't understand why. I've been given reasons why but I guess I just don't understand. Ping on Wired PC is now 5 ms and speed is a bit lower both download and upload. Same goes with Wi-Fi. Ping is higher and speed is lower. Very little has changed in my little room where all the equipment is. Help please.

Also, maybe I’m crazy but it seems like every now and then for few seconds here and there my connection at least on Wi-Fi drops completely. I’ll load a site and it’ll just sit there. Doing nothing. I close the window and in the time it takes to do that, open a new one and type the site again it’s working.

Thanks for listening. 😀

Go to www.speedtest.net and supply a snapshot of your speeds.

As to things getting slower, most of that could probably be explained away as there are now more people on the same line.
A good analogy is water pressure in your house pipes - only one person is having a shower and all is sweet, until someone turns on a tap and then the pressure lessens - more taps come 'online' and then everyone has to share the one pipe coming into the house.

Same for internet. All the house users share the one connection, that in turn is shared with the street, and the suburb, and all hang off the one exchange.
My guess is you were the first and only and had it all to yourself - now you don't, unless you are paying for a dedicated fibre line to the house to the nearest node - and that cost many thousands.

As the the wifi dropping completely, first you need to verify that somehow.
Is it just you noticing this, are other users/devices having issues?
Check your internet providers website for known outages and scheduled maintenance.
Reboot all your network hardware and check for firmware updates to them.

+1 on more users online. As more subscribers sign up the speed will reduce.
What you could’ve done (if possible) is use their router in modem mode then used your router connected to theirs. That way if your router fails you’ll have the provider’s router as a backup.

Nope, not without intervention by yourself.

The usual 'quick fix' is to go to the next higher plan, so for example, here in Oz our fibre optics is done by NBNCo and they offer (to simplify) a few plans - NBN25, NBN50, NBN100 and NBN Unlimited and they are priced accordingly.
If you find NBN25 not fast enough, you upgrade to NBN50 and so on.

But sadly that quick fix is also available to others on the same fibre so once they jump onboard, you are back to where you are starting from.
Speed to the house is a very simple rule - you get what you pay for.
So do that speed test and compare that to the advertised download/upload speed promised by your Provider.

Even though there may be no other users in the house, what about internet connected devices - CCTV, back-to-base alarms, smart TV, iPads, phones, NetFlix boxes, smart doorbell, garage door openers, hell - even fridges can be on the web.

And of course, it could also be your hardware or a fault on the line.
Ring you Provider if nothing above helps and they can do a fault test on the line, see if it meets their minimum specs for delivery, they can also check the signal to noise ratio and line attenuation values. (but so can you - they are in your modem config menu)

I appreciate the detailed response. Very awesome of you! My fiber company only offers 1 gig max, which is fine. They have smaller packages, of course, but I went for the biggest one they have. So as more people jump on, it takes away from my connection? Is that just the ones connected to the box that I have in my yard or is that all over town?

All depends on the old copper network, where they put the exchange/node and how they retro-fitted all that old crap into the new technology.

Potentially all over town but more likely just your local area.
Unless you have a dedicated line just for you, but they aren't cheap. We got a 200Mbps fibre line installed at work that gives us 200 up and 200 down - which we love, fastest I've ever had. We were on 40.
But we paid $21,000 for that privilege. Welcome to Australia and crap internet speeds!!!

You really need to do a speed test to confirm you speeds.
And ring your Provider and see what they can tell you about the line. :)

From what they’ve told me all their equipment is new and current. They ran knew everything in my town. They also tell me that the signal they are receiving from my equipment is working 100 percent. They said they can see my fiber that’s in my house from their equipment. 100 percent light coming through. Also, I’m in the states. Missouri to be exact.

The test seems to indicate you are getting what you pay for.
The connection speed can vary, quiet drastically sometimes.
Each time you are on the PC, do a test every 30mins or so, you should see wild swings.
The obvious, time of the day, and amount of devices in thew house, and in the neighbourhood all come into play.
