Solved GTX 980 or 1070

Hi everyone. I have someone building a pc for me with a variety of new and used parts. I’m fine with the risk associated with this - the guy has a 12 month replacement warranty etc, so all good. I have the choice of a 980, or for an extra $200 I can get a 1070. Money is a bit tight, so this is a bit steep for me, but possible if it’s a worthwhile jump in price. Can I please have opinions on whether it’s worth the extra $200, or if it would generally be unnoticed?

Background on the build: i7 6700, 16GB hyper x ddr4, 120gb ssd, 1tb HDD, motherboard - cant remember right now, 1000 psu gold 80+. With the 980 is $1400 (AUD), with the 1070 is $1600. I’m not using a proper gaming monitor, I’m using a 32inch Samsung led monitor, and will be using my pc for light gaming - just wow, sims, fortnite, COD, overwstch, and light photoshop and illustrator graphic design work.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Tiffany.
The GTX 980 is ample for what you intend to use the Computer for.
Benchmark of 9595.
I have a GTX 980 and I do heavy Photoshop rendering with it, no problems whatsoever.

Dougie, you’re a saint! Thank you so much. That’s exactly what I wanted to hear. I knew I didn’t need anything crazy awesome for my basic usage, but if it was a huge amazing dramatic difference, then I would have been happy to spend the extra $200. Thanks so much!

Hello TiffanyKate,

You could have asked your question in your thread here but fwiw you are wasting money on having 16GB of RAM and a 1000W Gold efficiency rated PSU, neither will be fully utilised, far better to select a motherboard that has at least four memory slots which would allow you to upgrade your RAM at a later date should you need to, my advice to you would be to go for a MB with four memory slots, 2 X 4GB sticks of RAM so that it runs in dual channel mode and a 650W Gold efficiency rated quality brand PSU such as Evga or Seasonic, avoid lesser brands such as Cooler Master, Raidmax and Thermaltake etc, the GTX 980 requires a 500W PSU and the good quality 650W is suggested to allow for any future upgrades such as additional storage devices or GPU upgrade etc.
