Solved Graphics Card Issue (Wont Display Windows)

Status
Not open for further replies.
Hi All

I have recently replaced a few bits in my PC.

The three new bits are:
AMD Ryzen 5 7600X
MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI
Corsair Vengeance RGB 64GB DDR5

Everything else in the build has remained the same and was working fine immediately before the re-build.

I am basically having an issue where the graphics card will not display anything beyond the bios screen (which I can see it will load through several times) most of the time. Occasionally it will load into windows but with an odd resolution which windows won’t let me change (greyed out). I try updating drivers and it says success but still shows them as an optional update (even though it says I have that version). I have removed and re installed but same seems to happen.

I have also updated the bios to the most recent version. If I use onboard graphics I don’t have issues so while it is sticking when I try loading windows, it appears to be relating to the graphics card in some way (ie not windows). Given the motherboard has just changed I don’t know if there is a setting in the bios which might anlso interfere in some way?

Any help would be much appreciated.

The Bits I already have which were working in the previous build are:
KL-C1000 PSU
Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML360L ARGB V2 62 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
2x standard SSD's, 1x m2, 1x HDD
MSI GAMING Z TRIO GeForce RTX 3070 LHR 8 GB Video Card
Phanteks Eclipse P600S ATX Mid Tower Case
Windows 11 Home

Occasionally it will load into windows but with an odd resolution which windows won’t let me change (greyed out).
See if we can get a speccy report.

So other can assist let get a speccy report.

Do not forget to post the make and model of the PSU if this is a desktop.

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

FYI as @phillpower2 has stated on other threads.

A new MB means a clean install of Windows and for two reasons **

Once Windows has been installed before doing anything else you must install the chipset drivers for the MB, the SATA/storage device drivers for any SSD and/or HDD followed by the drivers for any add on GPU that may be present, these steps are a must and have to be done before Windows is allowed to check for updates as it has a habit of downloading the wrong drivers on you.

Second reason is down to the Windows product key, ever since Windows 8 the Microsoft servers have stored the license key and corresponding MB details on their servers, this means that should a user ever need to do a clean install the servers check that the license key and MB details correspond and if they do the user does not need to enter a product key number, if the MB and license key do not match the user gets asked for a new product key, see my canned info below;

Unless your present product key is the full retail version you cannot use it with a new MB as an OEM product key is tied to the original MB it was paired with, to use an OEM key with a new MB is detected by the Microsoft servers as software piracy and therefore you get on screen warnings etc...

Exceptions to the above are 1: If your MB is replaced under warranty and 2: If your MB is replaced out of warranty with an alternative type but same brand due to the original model no longer being available, an upgraded MB however will require the purchase of a new OS license.

If you have a full retail disk and a product key that is not in use on another computer, the OEM restriction/s is/are not the same.

** It is possible to uninstall the previous MB drivers while the drive is still in that PC, the Windows license key info provided remains the same though, so the workaround is not worth the hassle.

Thanks for the initial response

Here is the spec output
http://speccy.piriform.com/results/k0zYhOuOlLZegis0kOTGi6U

I had already updated the bios, updated the graphics driver/ (although noting above issues) and updated windows 11 which is a fresh install with fresh license (was not ported across from old spec). I have just updated the AMD drivers and this time when it has logged in the resolution is now correct. However it is very unstable and so I am struggling to get far enough to check everything is using right drivers (ie re check windows and also the graphics drivers which were playing up) now before it crashes or freezes when I click on anything.

Not sure if I just need to start again and wipe the drive? The only issue is it took a long time to get to this point as with no drivers most times it wouldn’t load anything and I had to do it through onboard graphics to see anything. now I can at least get onto things.

KL-C1000 PSU

What on earth is the above, anything that I can find using such limited information comes back with a PSU that is of such poor quality that it should come with a free fire extinguisher

Not sure if I just need to start again and wipe the drive?

Couple of things of note but will just mention the glaringly obvious one for now;

Operating System
Windows 11 Home 64-bit
Computer type: Desktop
Installation Date: 26/09/2023 13:02:19

The recent reinstall was not done correctly, see my canned info below;

Once Windows has been clean installed you must then install first the MBs chipset drivers then the storage/SATA drivers and third the graphics drivers, the drivers can either come from a disk provided by the motherboard manufacturer or downloaded from their site and saved to a flash drive etc, this is a must and Windows should not be allowed to check for updates before it has been done as more often than not Windows installs the wrong drivers or in the incorrect order and this can cause all sorts of problems.

The chipset is what enables the MB to be able to communicate with all the hardware + are the first drivers that Windows looks for on boot.

Can I ask that you do not quote every reply as we have to read the full post to make sure nothing gets missed,, thanks.

So, very odd, I re-installed in correct order and same issue again. I should add, I also have a Phanteks Premium GPU riser kit which I hadn't really thought of. This was also in my old computer as well. I removed this and put the GPU directly into the motherboard and this has sorted the issues. I have been able to update everything as needed.

However, on placing it back in, I am having the same issue again where nothing is displayed on my screen most of the time I boot. The cable works fine with my old motherboard so I am wondering if there is a setting on the new motherboard I need to change in the Bios or something to make it compatible? Any thoughts?

Thanks

Lewis

Sorry but what was advised in my reply #4 still stands.

We need to know the brand and model name or number of the PSU and see a Speccy url that shows that Windows and the system drivers have been correctly installed.

This should tell you that the Phanteks Premium GPU riser kit is the issues since they system works without it.

Just because it was in and attach to the old does not mean that it is needed and has to be used in the new.

So others are aware in case anyone else has this problem in the future. The problem was being caused by the Phanteks Premium GPU riser kit.

This is not compatible with PCIe 4.0 which was being used by the new motherboard. The two options I found were to simply plug the GPU directly into the new motherboard, or alternatively to change the bios settings to PCLe 3.0, which I found has made no real noticeable difference to the performance of the GPU.
