GPU not being used in Windows 10

Not open for further replies.
My GPU is always on 0% in the task manager, even while playing games. I have a AMD Radeon HD 8490 in a Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF. Games don't play very well and I'm not sure if it is because it is not being utilised or if I just need to get a better GPU. I want to upgrade to a GTX 1050 Ti Low Profile but I'm not completely sure if it will work.

Hi there @lhock17 and Welcome to PCHF :)

Please go HERE and download the portable version of Speccy. Save it to somewhere you can find, locate the file and as it comes as a Zip file use your favorite unzip application to decompress it. Open the newly created folder and double left click Speccy.exe if you have a 32 bit system or Speccy64.exe if yours is 64bit. If you are not sure what your system is click HERE.

Now that your link has been copied please paste it into your next post. It should look something like the example below :)

BTW: once you have finished with speccy and no longer want it removing it is easy because it is a portable app with no install. Simply delete the downloaded file and folder you created when you decompressed it. Gone:thumbsup:

Apologies lhock17, for some reason your reply #3 has been missed, can sometimes happen if a notification gets lost in traffic or the spam folder

Do you still need help with this.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF has very little to no upgrade path and especially when it comes to add on video cards, the Dell's proprietary 255W PSU rules this out as even the less power hungry GTX 1050 Ti requires a PSU with a minimum of 300W & 27 amps on the +12V rail.

The present video card is not intended for gaming only light duties such as school or office type work, this because of its low power requirements and low spec such as being only 64-bit, it is being utilised though as you can see from your Speccy report.

Graphics
QHD270 (2560x1440@60Hz)
1024MB ATI AMD Radeon HD8490 (Dell): 40 °C

Edit to add: You can check the minimum system requirements for most PC games using Can I run it?

Thanks for letting me know. I have heard that it can run pretty much fine without 300w and I found a video of someone installing one into a Optiplex 9020.
Thanks for your help.

PSU requirements are often overstated but they are given for a reason, using anything lower than what is recommended by the GPU manufacturer will automatically void any warranty should the card fail due to such use, some related info here and a video nasty of cheap, generic PSUs being tested here

You are welcome btw :)
