GPU Driver Problems - NZXT Prebuilt

Status
Not open for further replies.
Hello, my friend bought an NZXT prebuilt PC a good while ago, around Christmas and has had nothing but issues with it.

Specs: Intel Core i5-10400F
MSI Ventus GTX 1660 Super
after that I'm not sure, and I'm still not 100% on that being the right card.

I can't even remember the exact problems he's had in the past but they've all had something to do with the GPU, and all have resulted in sending the computer back. It just came back a few weeks ago from the second "repair." It came without the GPU plugged in, to prevent damages which is fair. He plugs in (correctly) and upon hooking his DisplayPort cable and booting, he is presented his desktop with purple dots all over it. Since GeForce Experience was already downloaded, it was as simple as clicking download and install on the game ready driver. Everything was fine, it functioned properly until the next day when he was greeted a choppy wallpaper (animated wallpaper from Wallpaper Engine), he disabled the thing where Windows automatically installs new drivers or something like that, and reinstalled the driver I had because it works (456.71, I know it's old but we have the same card). PC functioned perfectly fine, and even after turning it off and coming back the next day it was still good. However, tonight when we got ready to play, it does it again. So this time he tried a more complicated fix, he's not too good with PCs, and my knowledge only stretches so far as I've learned most stuff online. I'm going to list the steps the article told him and that he followed.

Step 1: Download NVIDIA Driver
He still had 457.61 in his downloads folder.

Step 2: Temporarily disable your internet.
Simple, he did it.

Step 3: Uninstall graphics driver via device manager, or better use DDU.
He didn't use DDU, as he was pretty furious already and I guess overlooked it.

Step 4: Open Control Panel, go to Programs and Features, and then uninstall every entry that has NVIDIA mentioned in the name.
He did, this consists of FrameView SDK, GeForce Experience, and PhysX System Software. (Not Graphics Driver 457.61 as it uninstalled) The PC had to restart after every single one.

Step 5: Open Task Manager, kill all NVIDIA processes, and restart.
He did this, and here is where the real fun begins.

Step 6: Upon boot, install driver using custom, and only pick GPU Driver, PhysX, and GeForce Experience. Then you're good to go.
Once the PC turned on, he put his password in and saw a blank grey screen, then his taskbar showed, but nothing would work. He tried restarting it, and to no avail nothing worked. He has since given up, and plans to chew out NZXT on the phone tomorrow. I would like to try and help him fix it, so he doesn't have to wait another three to four weeks on a PC that will arrive messed up again.

This was definitely a lot to read and I'm sorry, if there is any confusion let me know, and if you have a fix let me know. It will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello

Post the complete psu spec's and what OS are you using?
As far as the specs go, it's the NZXT Starter Plus PC, so

Intel Core i5-10400F 6-Core 2.9 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Super
T-Force Vulcan Z 16GB at 3000 MHz
B560 Motherboard (doesn't list brand)
500W Bronze PSU
M.2 2280 512GB SSD
Windows 10 Home

(sorry for not listing the first time, didn't see them)

It's a possibility that the poor psu may have damaged the gpu.. Could test it in another pc with the correct psu and or get a better psu.

EDIT: If you go with a new psu, go with one that has at least a 5 to 10 year warranty .. Yes we see these pc builders make a pretty good pc's and yet put a crap psu in it. The win 10 should have the latest update 21H1.
