Good day/evening,
Just recently, the Free Space on my SSD C drive drops approx 10-15 GB every hour, reaching 0 GB at some point later in the day.
Maybe something to do with Pagefile settings?
I did receive help from your forum last week & maybe a setting was altered and not changed back to its original state.

About an hour later free space now 149 GB.

Let me know what can be done.
thanks for your help,

Paul

Hi jmarket,
Thanks for the quick reply.
I just realized that I haven't run the DelFix Tool yet as recommended by malnutrition to clean things up. Don't know if that has any bearing.

Here is the log ...

It's at 128 GB now, but I've seen it over 160 GB. The C drive is used only for the OS, not storing anything else on it, so should be much higher.
The Document & Settings folder is locked, which is strange.

Are you by any chance using Hibernation? That will chew quite a few GB of space, especially if it's System managed

Windows will usually eat some space, but not gigabytes until it's 0. It sounds like there might be foul play here.

Try using Space Sniffer. It's free and will allow you to see visually what's eating your space and if it matches what Windows tells you. Give it a try :)

I believe hibernation is only available on laptops.

Hibernation is available on both desktops and laptops :) It's like sleep mode but will actually shut down windows and power off then resume where it left off :)

Another program you might wanna try is WinDirStat :) It's free also, and it will actually tell you what file(s) are eating your space. After doing more research, it sounds like a cache file is to blame.

OK. I know malnutrition recommended that it be removed on my laptop to save space, don't remember if I also removed that function on this desktop, but it's not showing in the Shut Down menu.

I've run SpaceSniffer and the area circled in red is constantly flashing/changing so that, overtime, the Free Space area in green is slowly
reduced.

Windows.edb is the cache file for search indexing. I recommend you deactivate it and delete the file. Here's how to do so :)

  • Search for "Indexing Options" Open it.
  • Search "services" (or run "services.msc", or use task manager's services tab) and find "Windows Search". Stop the service.
  • Delete the Windows.edb file from C:\Program Data\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows
For SSDs, you may not want to index your drive - a search will be quick without it and it's a waste of space as well as unnecessary wear and tear on your SSD. In the indexing options box, click Modify and uncheck any SSDs you may have. You may want to keep the start menu indexed - it should show up as an included location. If you have any libraries located on your SSD, remove them from the included locations. If you have another drive on your computer that is larger than your SSD, you may want to store the index file there. Click Advanced and under "index location" click "select new."
Click Advanced in the already-open "Indexing Options" panel after the service restarts itself, then click rebuild.

C:\Program Data\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows

I do not see a Search folder under Microsoft and cannot find the .edb file. ( I know that Show Hidden Folders is checked under Advanced Settings. )
Also, the SSD C drive was already unchecked under Indexed Locations... see below....
If I stop the Windows Search service, I am unable to Modify Indexing Options as the Modify button will not be highlighted.
Must first Modify, Rebuild, then stop Windows Search under Services.msc as last step.

I've changed the .edb index location to the D drive, clicked Rebuild, & stopped Windows Search service.
Should anything else be unchecked below?

I've rebooted my pc after making the changes above but C drive free space is still dropping, but at a slower rate. Every few minutes an Indexing scan will start as shown in the Indexing Options screen, which I think relates to the 2 TB D drive.

I've disabled indexing for the 2 TB D drive, rebooted the pc, and C drive free space is now 171 GB
The Indexing Option screen was initially paused and has now started to index items, which coincides with the hard drive indicator light to flash.

Is it normal for indexing to kick in every few minutes?
