Solved First Gaming PC build - Advice for a mum :-)

HI peeps, I'm helping my 15 year old son build his first PC.

The components he wants are:
ASUS Dual RTX 2060 O6G EVO Graphics Card, MSI MAG B550M Mortar Wifi Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard, AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core processor, Cooler Master Hyper 212 RGB 57.3 CFM CPU Cooler, OLOy WarHawk RGB 16 GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3600 CL 18 Memory, Samsung 970 EVO 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive, Seagate Barracuda Compute 2 TB 3.5" 7200 RPM Internal Hard Drive, be quiet! Pure Base 500DX ATX Mid-Tower base.

I'm not sure about the power supply though. I'm currently tossing up between the Corsair HX 750W 80+ Platinum and the Corsair RM 850x 850W 80+ V2 Gold...

So do I go the higher end model with 750 watts or the slightly lower model with 850 watts??

I'm thinking you may all tell me go the 750 watt as it is easily enough for his system? But I'm wondering about future proofing... I wasn't going for the HXi models as more expensive, and do you really NEED the monitoring?

Hello Nundra,

Nice build there but I would change the Seagate HDD for a WD Black as they are far more reliable.

Regarding the PSU, I believe in both future proofing and paying more for quality but at the same time I don`t believe in overdoing things either, a 750W Gold efficiency rated PSU is way more than what is required but it makes no sense to go lower as the prices are not much different.

Took a look around Aus websites and most things that I would have gone for first are either out of stock or pre order, best I could find that is in stock Rm750x the 10 year warranty would be a must for me with such an expensive build, could have suggested one or two from Seasonic but they only had 7 year warranty periods.

Thank you so much phillpower2 for this great advice. I use WD for my external hard drives and haven't used Seagate for years - so thanks for the reminder - we will definitely take that advice. Re PSU, the Corsair 750 HX Platinum is on sale for only $239 as compared to the RM 750x for $201 - so maybe the extra efficiency brought by Platinum rating is worth the extra $38 in the long run?
