File recovery Software

Are you able to suggest what software Or Best software I need to recover about 700 GB of files from an external USB drive. I will try and explain.

So sometime ago I tried to reinstate windows, but it had not been keeping a recovery drive going. So I started the process of setting up a recovery drive/file history drive, and the only drive that I had that was large enough at that time was my 1 TB external USB drive which I used for backups etc plus files and photos that I did not want on my internal drives.
Windows asked for the size and I allowed about 250 GB.
Months went by and I went to get a file from the once 1 TB drive only to find the file was not there, and that windows had renamed and resized the drive to 250 GB, so nothing other than the recovery files ( file history) can be seen.

So the files were never deleted, just removed from the drive index or what ever you want to call it, I have run some free software and can see a lot of the files I want, but have gone no further than that as I do not want to chance losing anything. I know I am going to have to buy some decent software, and have been looking at reviews, but they seem almost as though they are paid for reviews and I am now at the point where I don't trust any of them.

It would be great if you can point me in the right direction, Thanks

I think you unfortunately have learned the lesson of not creating backups/system images.

A little confused when you say you want to recover 700GB of files from a 250GB partition?

but not to be warned that windows will claim ownership of the drive makes me so mad

If this drive is an external drive made on another/previous system, have you tried taking ownership of the drive?

Recuva seems to have a good name in file recovery if you need one.

First NO LESSON TO BE learnt HERE System IMAGE would not recover photos etc on a drive that was not a SYSTEM DISK and even if it did it would not have seen the 700 GB it hid

SECOND IF you read what I had said "THIS DRIVE W A S a 1 TB drive" until I made the mistake of allowing windows to use 250 GB of it as a file history drive. So 250 plus 700 is about 1 TB if my maths is correct. You think your confused, if windows asks how much drive space it can use and you put 250 GB you don't expect it to use 250 and hide the 700 plus do you!!!!!!

Fourth don't go there

Last Thank you that's all you had to say

Oh yes it is very common to recover any sort of files from a system image NO MATTER where the image was saved. That is one reason for creating system images.

and that windows had renamed and resized the drive to 250 GB

good luck with it.
