Are you connecting through a router or switch or via a cable connected to the device and computer.
Your computer and the device have to be in the same range.
What is the ip of the device.
What is your ip address.
On your computer click on start>Type in cmd>Click on te command prompt.
Copy and paste the next line and press enter.
ipconfig /all
You are looking for IPv4 Normally 192.16.8.xxx.xxx or 10.0.0.xxx

What is the device in question? Does its documentation specify an IP address? Is it configurable? Does it use DHCP? nmap -sn 192.168.0.* Will ping scan the whole 192.168.0 address space and report any hosts that responds. But for that your linux PC also has to be on that subnet. If you have no idea on what subnet the device is, good luck.
