I am setting up a new Acer Aspire computer. First I changed back to Windows 10, the computer had Windows 11. All went OK . Buy now I am having trouble with the DVD /CD drive.
I went into AUTO PLAY, and set everything to "ASK ME EVERY TIME." Like I had done several times in the past when setting up a new computer. Well nothing happened when I put a DVD program or even an audio disc in the tray. I checked DEVICE MANAGER, and it told me the device was working properly. I even had the computer search for a better drive. No luck. The DVD rom did not even show up in File Explorer. I then went back into the AUTOPLAY section, and set most items to OPEN FOLDER to view, or the music ones I set to PLAY WITH WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER. Now if I put a music disc in the player, it shows up in FILE MANAGER, and I can open it from there. Why is the choice of ASK ME EVERYTIME npt working ? Thanks, Mike

Update. I just got off the phone with Amazon and Acer support. The Acer guy told me that the DVD reader in the computer is too new, for my discs. I think that is a crock of . Your opinions, please. Aazon is sending me a return shipping label.

What is the exact model name or number of the Acer Aspire, there are too many to even begin listing them here.

Before downgrading to Windows 10 did you go to Acer and download and save the drivers to a USB thumbdrive then install them straight after the Windows 10 install and starting with the chipset drivers first, this is a must as it is the chipset that enables the MB to be able to communicate with all the other hardware.

Hello

Go to the first mark in the video and see if that helps.

Thanks veeg, for the reply. I tried most of the suggestions in the video. The DVD reader always opens, and I can hear it spinning for a few seconds, then it stops., but it does not read the disc. The DVD reader is listed in Device manager. I click on it and tell it to check for new drivers. It tells me it already has the newest drivers. The DVD reader sometimes appears in File Explorer. If it appears in File Explorer and I click on it, I can choose a song and it will play it. But it rarely appears in File Explorer.

HI, thanks for the reply. The computer is an Acer Aspire TC-1760 UA92 desktop. I did not go into the Acer website to download any drivers after I went back to Windows 10. However, I went to Device Manager, and the DVD reader IS listed there. I then clicked on Update drivers, and it tells me the newest drivers are already installed. Once is a blue moon, the DVD reader WILL appear in File Manager, but not often, and it may take several minutes. If and when it appears in File Manager, I can click on it, and then play a song or whatever.

Being that the computer is so new the Acer rep may quite well be being straight with you about the drivers, quickest way to find out is to go here where the Acer auto detect will provide a list of drivers available to you.

The above suggests more of a hardware issue, loose cable etc.

Hi. I followed your link for Acer drivers. I entered my SNID number but it only came up with a few drivers. There were none pertaining to the 8X DVD reader. I did not see anywhere that it would scan my computer for missing drivers. I did check all the cables. They are all plugged in fully.

My mistake regarding the driver auto detect but were the drivers yo found for Windows 10 or Windows 11, there are no Windows 10 drivers available anywhere else for this computer.

Most hardware is plug n play now but chipset drivers will always need to be installed as those drivers are written by the manufacturer of a MB, were any drivers that you found chipset drivers.

You shouldn`t be having to open up the PC because it can void your warranty but seeing that you have already done this any way, the MB schematics show that there are two SATA data ports and two accompanying power ports, see attachment below, if correct. swap the data and power connectors from the present two ports over to the other two.

Edit to add, managed to find the drivers at acer here and it confirms that there are no dedicated Windows 10 drivers, see second attachment which shows that only Windows 11 is supported.

Hello again. Here is the SNID number for my computer. (deleted for privacy) You are correct, there are no drivers for Windows 10. Should I download that chipset driver ? Maybe I will unbox the computer one more time, and try moving those cables as you suggested.

Can I ask that you do not quote every reply as we have to read the full post to make sure nothing gets missed,, thanks.

Try the chipset driver first and only open up the PC again as a last resort.

Hello phillpower2. I downloaded that Chipset driver, and changed the cables as you suggested. No change. I have concluded that it must be a defective drive. I plan to send it back to Amazon. Thank you and veeg for offering help and suggestions. Sorry I wasted so much of your time. Much appreciated. Thanks, Mike

Sorry that it was something that we could not help you fix but you are welcome in any event.

Would suggest that if there is a recovery partition that you use it to put the PC back to the way that it was when you got it, you may get problems with the warranty claim if you leave the unsupported OS on it rather than the Windows 11 that the PC shipped with.
