Solved During Racing Sims, Inexplicable Crashes / CMOS Reset

Status
Not open for further replies.
Hello o/.

The external SSD is just for my racing sims. They take up a ton of space. I haven't tried to remove it but it's relatively new and the shutdowns are not..

I have a logictec racing wheel and that's it besides my headphones and monitor.

The beeping is five short, even beeps.

Shouldn't have said "external." SATA inside system.

I have not reseated the cpu. When you say "assembled the system outside of the case on a piece of cardboard," do you mean disassemble, place parts on cardboard and reassemble back *in the case to make sure all the connections are correct?

Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.

Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options;

List Installed Programs
List Devices (Only Problems)
List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Click on Go.

Post the resulting log in your next reply for us if you will.

Apologies Alex, the MTB request list should have been as follows;

List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
List Installed Programs
List Devices (Only Problems)
List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click on Go.

Post the resulting log in your next reply for us if you will.

Can you repeat the procedure when you are ready, I may not be around until tomorrow morning UK time now so will leave you in the more than capable hands of Russ (y)

It is rFactor2 Dedicated.exe causing these latest problems, the only way that we are going to be able to move on here is by you doing the following;

Download and save the following two programs.

You want the free versions at the both links;

For stress testing your GPU Furmark

For checking your FPS etc SUPERPOSITION

Once you have the downloads, shutdown the computer, turn off the wireless router and disconnect the Ethernet cable from the PC.

Start up the computer, run both tests, post back with an update when ready.

I ran FurMark and it shut down my pc. I've attached what I was published.

I was unable to get a readable file from Superposition so I took a screenshot of the results. I hope they are helpful.

Curious that the rFactor 2 dedicated server has caused the shut downs. I ran it once yesterday just to see if it was working but other than that its been a very long time since I've touched it. Asstto Corsa Competizione has been the game that's been running the most when I experience failures. Can it cause issues when not running?

The shutdown was after about 8 minutes? temps hit 87c and then the typical full fan power and black screen. "No signal source" from monitor. Upon attempted restart, 5 short beeps and full fan power. It's that every time. Not during shutdown but when I try to power back up.

Side note, was on a discord call during a shutdown for the first time last night and was able to hear and be heard after the failure. I have no control over the machine at that point so had to power down but thought it was interesting.

What reached 87 °C

If the CPU you need to do a close inspection of the CPU cooler, you are checking for dust clogging the cooling veins on the heatsink and if the heatsink itself is sitting securely atop of the CPU.

the GPU reached 87. I know thats not considered high but 87-88 has corresponded with the shutdowns so I'm just noting.

I will have to clean and repaste to perform this check correct? Never done it.. If so I need to make sure I still have some handy.

I do. But if it's coming down to blowing air onto it with a desk fan... maybe it's time for a new build?

You're saying 87 sounds like an overheating GPU or possibly PSU but everything I've seen online says that's an at least safe operating temp. Not sure I understand why would that be causing a failure.

The idea of the fan is for testing purposes only, you temporarily direct the air from the fan to the inside of the case to see if that reduces the temps enough for the computer to be able to run stable, if it does it 100% confirms an overheating problem which btw as mentioned could be the insides of the PSU.

Your GPU is ok up to circa 90 °C as long as it is not a regular occurrence but if your GPU has been running at 87 °C long term it could well be on its way out.

I take it that you are aware of the damage that heat does to all things electrical.

With the case open and a fan on the GPU my, GPU temps were at a consistent 85c occasionally hitting 86c. I was able to run races for about an hour and fifteen minutes without a failure and move quickly through multiple menus afterwards which has been a trigger for the shutdowns after racing sessions.

Granted, it sometimes takes days to re-trigger the shutdowns after making changes but having been able to get that far during this recent period of much quicker failures seems to point to temps as a cause.

It's a micro ATX case. Am I stuck with having to keep it open?

Do you happen to have a model name or number for the case so we can look for any user manual, if there is scope for adding a couple more chassis fans you may be ok but if not I would look to move your components into a mid ATX tower, as you are finding smaller cases do not make for good cooling when there are high end GPUs inside of them.

Ideal cooling set up is the pull - push arrangement, two induction fans in the front to draw in cool clean air across the internal components and one large exhaust fan + the PSUs internal cooling fan expelling air at the back, any additional top or side fans are only a bonus and are not a replacement.

Download Speedfan and install it. Once it's installed, run the program and post here any information it shows.

So that we have a comparison to Speedfan, download, run and grab a screenshot of HWMonitor (free).

To capture and post a screenshot;

Click on the ALT key + PRT SCR key..its on the top row..right hand side..now click on start...all programs...accessories...paint....left click in the white area ...press CTRL + V...click on file...click on save...save it to your desktop...name it something related to the screen your capturing... BE SURE TO SAVE IT AS A .JPG ...otherwise it may be to big to upload... after typing in any response you have... click on Upload a File to add the screenshot.

Screenshot instructions are provided to assist those that may read this topic but are not yet aware of the “how to”.
