If you're selling a computer, you need Eraser – it permanently deletes and overwrites and sensitive data you want to prevent falling into the wrong hands.

Why you need it

Getting rid of your old computer involves more than just selling it – you need to consider erasing your data to prevent it getting into the wrong hands. But simply putting it in the Recycle Bin won't cut it, as the data may still be recoverable. Instead, you'll need something heavy duty – something like Eraser.

That's because deleting a file in Windows doesn't actually destroy the file, it merely severs the link between the file and the operating system. The file itself still exists until it is overwritten, meaning your sensitive data can be recovered further down the line.

What Eraser does is overwrite these files several times, ensuring even the most tech-savvy intruder won't be able to find your private data. There's also a scheduler, so you can let Eraser get stuck in to large tasks while you're sleeping or working.

This all means you can sell on your PC, safe in the knowledge that your private data is out of the reach of any unscrupulous buyer.

Key features

  • Works on: PC
  • Versions: Free
  • Safely erase data: Eraser ensures your data is completely deleted and overwritten, something the standard Windows deletion can't guarantee
  • Set up a schedule: If you have a lot of files to overwrite, you can set Eraser to work on a schedule, enabling it to get to work while you sleep
