I was recently gifted 75% of a gaming PC (everything except for the SSD and the GPU). I am in the process of ordering the GPU and SSD and it just now hit me that the OS is usually saved on the hard drive. Since the person took the SSD with him to his new build am I going to have to purchase and install windows on this build once it's complete?

Peter has it right with Ubuntu, fairly user friendly as well. Keep in mind that not all games support Unix-based operating systems, there is far more support in terms of Windows OS.

Valve also makes an Operation System, SteamOS if that's your preferred DRM.
